Is anyone else in the same boat? Like, number 1 and 2 on your ROL are locked in an epic battle for list domination? One is the lofty academic powerhouse of awesome that you know is going to do wonderful things for your career and the other is the dirty crush dark horse that you just like cuz you do, despite knowing you shouldn't?

Love is a battlefield, guys!

Any similar experiences/thoughts?

Oh absolutely. My #1 is a nice program where I know I'd get great training, it has happy residents, etc. My #2 is like the bad boy your mom always warned you about. But ooh, he's so hot.

Honestly though, I'd be ridiculously happy to get either #1 or #2.

What about getting both?

I've got 3 crushes... kinda like a love square.

I'd say go with your gut feeling and just accept who you are. If you are someone who needs the big name, nice facility, and feel more comfortable working with privileged population, just acknowledge that fact and be okay with it. i think people subconciously feel guilty about it and end up ranking dirty hippie programs because they feel they should like it.

Likewise there are also dirty hippie applicants that end up ranking big fancy places maybe because all their lives they've gone to big fancy schools and it's hard to rank a bad ass no-name hospital supposedly not worthy of their own perceived pedigrees, even though they know they love the under-served population and vomit when there's too much pretense and formality.

Life is too short. Be okay with who you are. Get the name if you want it. Get the dirt if you want it. At the end you'll be well trained no matter which place.

Program number 1 is my soul mate! 😍 The other 9 or so i would just have a one night stand with! Well, actually it would be more like a 1,460 night stand with a 3yr program and a 1,825 night stand with a 4yr program....

Gah! I'm so jealous. My #1a caters to one aspect of my personality and my #1b to another. What can I say? I'm sooooo high-maintenance! 🙄

I thought I had my #1-#3 locked down solid, but ive been waffling as of late. Why cant this be like the bachelor? I could go out with each for a few rotations, then in the last like 3 months of residency pick "the one" to graduate from.

Is anyone in the horrendous situation of being in love with their number 1, but everything else isn't coming close?

Honestly, yes. Well, pretty much. My number 1 and 2 I love to bits. They would be like being able to vacation down in a swanky beach side villa in the Caribbean. Everything after that is more like sitting in a lawn chair next to a pothole full of rainwater.

LOL...well if thats the case, i hope you get either 1 or 2!

Ive been seeing more and more post under the match threads and more and more classmates saying they have sent love letters to programs (yes more than 1)saying "u are my #1". I didn't send any and when I tell classmates that I didn't they look at me like I should be held for psych evaluation. Everywhere I interviewed said they kept a running score of interviewees so that you were scored/ranked at the end of the day, so my question is does the love fest it really matter? I mean really, is a PD going to go back and say" this dude is ranked in the bottom 1/4 of our pool of applicants, but since he dropped me an email saying he really really really wants to be here the other day Im bumping him up into the top 10%"?
I got the impression from ALL the EM PDs that I met on the trail that they were above this ploy.

I think a summary of the opinions I've heard here on this subject are:

1) It probably doesn't make any difference to PD's.
2) It can't hurt to communicate your honest enthusiasm for a program.
3) If you've come this far and invested this much time and effort in matching, you might sleep better thinking you've done all you can to get the residency you want.

From a ranking point of view, I'm looking for the best match and a big part of that is striking a chord personally with the faculty, PD etc at a program. In this respect I find it reassuring when I get positive followup from a program because I figure if they like me, there's a good chance it will be mutual. In the hopes that this may work both ways, I have written a "hello" to my favorite places, though I doubt it actually changes anything.

I guess it's good for your peace of mind if they write back and say something positive, and maybe that's the real reason people do it.

PS - a couple places did tell me that they like people who are interested to "keep in touch" and "let us know what you're thinking" because "we like to know that you're interested in us" though the majority didn't. I have to say though that I found someone asking you for love letters a real turn off.
