Im a CA - 1 reading M/M but its taking forever, dunno if I will be able to finish it.
My plan was to read M/M, then skim through secrets and do Hall...

but realistically, I will be out of tiem coz i will have busy rotations coming up...what should i do to secure a >30!?!??!

any recent takers...please

on teh otehr hand, I really want to learn from a text and not just study for an exam...

damn I wish I had more time. 🙁

I just need to hear from people and come to a consensus...that my strategy is OK...

i know about faust, etc...but i dont wanna start a new book.

i havent been exposted to cardiothoracic surgery, obs or peds either...so I will need to do that myself...straight up textboos knowledge...dunno how good that will be without any clinical experience...but well see

any ideas/ hints on how i should tackle this?

Forget secrets, that's a med student book at best.

Hall is solid - read the explanations. But you need to see the info once (primary reading) before you start questions.

I liked Faust. It's getting old so be careful with some sections.

I guess M&M is ok - people have used it for boards.

The bulk of my reading was Barash. I went through Faust once before the CA1 ITE. I hadn't done any subspec rotations by Spring CA1 and still scored in your target range. I did Hall and ACE questions as a CA3 to prepare for the final ITE and the real writtens.

Just a personal soapbox, but I would recommend reading a real text while in residency. M&M might help you pass the boards but I think you need Barash/Longnecker/Big Miller for a good foundation. There are anecdotal reports of people passing the writtens with just Baby Miller but I can't imagine that's a good plan.

Of course, you don't really need a 30 as a CA-1, so it's not the end of the world if you don't get it. You have 2 years 5 months to get your score up before the real thing.

What about just Baby Miller for the ITE as a CA-1? Any thoughts?

pmpmd,

i agree with your plan. i actually like barash...but i already finished the first 15 chapters of m/m before i opened barash...and i didnt want to hop and change and use new resources...so im sticking with m/m but i refer to barash frequently.

the problem im having is that...how well am i expected to know m/m to do well on this exam? i mean just read it...or know it inside out like lets say...first aid for usmle step 1?

granted one is a bullet point book...and one is a text...altho some would argue that m/m is a review book as well.

the problem im facing is time mgt...days are long and tiring and even when i try to read...the most i can do is 20 to 30 pages...otherwise im just skimming...

Try to read at least 30 minutes a day. You shouldn't try reading in the OR as a first semester CA1, so you'll have to read at home. At this stage of your training, I would put more emphasis on learning anesthesiology so you can be a competent clinician, as opposed to learning it for the boards. Yes, many programs require a certain score on the ITE but the bar is usually low (>25%ile). If you like M&M, then stick with it for this year. I still think it's a little light, but if you've read half of it, then at least finish it. I would hold on board review til closer to the exam. Focus on your primary reading now. Read up on your patients and cases. Yes, it's nice to smoke the ITE, but it shouldn't be your #1 focus right now.

I think that Baby Miller is ITE gold, even better than Big Blue which is also excellent (but not worth the expense). I don't think you should direct all of your studying towards the ITE, but in my experience, a very high ITE score will change the way most of your attendings deal with you.

I'm not a huge fan of Faust and Hall. I've gone through them twice and I'm not sure it's worth it. The old retired questions from the 90's are much better, as are ACE questions.

1) i am on call and got paged. and i was using my ipad to type. also i was not aware that you use the posts on this public forum as your grammar homework.
2) thanks for showcasing your douchebag tendencies. gives us insight into your miserable nature.
3) if you do not have anything constructive to add to my inquiry, kindly stfu and spend your friday evening doing something more productive. thanks 🙂

Dude, he's just pulling your chain. Your *sshole is apparently so tight, you couldn't even squeeze a proton through there.

I would suggest M and M. That was my primary text during my residency training. I read that book about 6 times. I looked at Big miller if I wanted to go deeper into a particular topic. The problem with trying to read a large text book from cover to cover is that you will forget most of what you read in the early parts of the book when you are finished reading the book. The hand book for Anesthesia and Co-Existing diseases is great. The larger book is way too much. I agree that mixing in questions is high yield.

Large hard cover text books are for reference purposes. A well written synopsis of a given topic will serve you better than a large text that you cannot read more than twice during your residency.

Alright prick.
Lets see here

1) 'that weak (,THEN) don't...'

How about the use of a COMMA and the word THEN, between weak and don't?

2) 'second grade level of a guy speaking English as a second language'

Ummm, ever heard of redundancy in a sentence structure? Go read more books and expand your vocab so you dont embarass yourself.

Yes, you would LOVE to see me flip out in real life. I murder annoying little ***** like you: you know the loud, obnoxious OR music playing nurse types, when I cant hear the pulse ox. You know the types who don't know how to handle themselves; you know the type who doesn't add any value to what they do. Yes, your type - the type who instead of answering the question on hands diverts the topic and wastes time on insignificant bull****.
I know exactly how to handle your type. I actually enjoy it. Thank you very much.
Now you have been PWND, and my questions have been answered.

So toodles.
Unnecessary.

apparently so do you 🙂
a LOTTTT more.

on this thread: post count - 4, useless info 0.

you should just sleep and stop posting.:laugh::laugh:

Wow. So much rage coming from someone who is asking for advice. Why don't you just relax, take a breath, count to 20, and ignore posts that you don't like?
