But I'm going to post anyway...

You can see my GPA and school in my signature...just curious if anyone has any opinion on how well I need to do on the DAT to be competitive in California schools. I'm obviously shooting for 20+ across the board, but would it kill me if I scored 19's?

I have about 100 hours of volunteering at a free dental clinic (which is actually shadowing two to four dentists and chairside assisting). I am feeling really lazy when it comes to studying mostly because I work 40-50 hrs a week.

Thanks for your input in advance.

Three things and an answer (my opinion): First, good job on graduating from a UC with an awesome GPA in a killer major. Secondly, I am sure you feel 100% lazy after working a full day, but it is super important to have your AADSAS submitted as soon as you can (like by the end of this month), even if you haven't completed the DAT. Third, take the DAT as soon as you can.

Lastly, in response to what you were actually asking: it depends on which CA schools you're looking at, but as a rule- don't count on any one thing getting you in, ie. your amazing GPA. Fight to avg at least 20s on your TS and AA. That means, that if you score a 19 in one area it is not a huge deal if you make up for it in another. Go ahead and follow through with your obvious academic dedication and aim for 20s - you can't afford to rest on your laurels just yet.

You might take a look at PreDents.com to get a better idea of those accepted to CA schools with GPAs like yours.

Best of luck with everything.

with a 4.0 you could get 19s. I'm not too sure about your 3.923832432 tho... 20s at least 👍 👍 👍 👍

you're one of those people who present themselves as humble and even self-critical, but does so ultimately to have their egos stroked nice and slow by unsuspecting good-willed people who actually buy into their wholesome bullsh*t act.

i mean, really, i can punch you in the face. i mean not literally, but you know what i mean.

its about time to delete these "i have 3.9 GPA will i get into dental school oh my god im so unreasonably scared and confidently insecure" threads that cloud SDN this time of the year. it gets annoying after awhile

🙂

let's start off with spelling.

j/k!! :meanie:

With such a high GPA, you should be able to score 20s across the board without much effort. If you don't, you'll probably feel quite dumb since plenty of people with much lower GPAs score better. Don't sell yourself short and just try to get the minimum to be competitive. Might as well shoot for outstanding if you have the ability. It'll increase your chances of getting a scholarship and being the one choosing which school to go to, rather than hoping the schools choose you. And even with your GPA, it's unlikely UCLA or UOP would consider you without 20+.

I have been out of school for a year and only work this much now (and during the summers I was not in school), when I was in school I worked btw 20-35 hrs a week and commuted to San Diego...AND I'll tell you it took me 6 years to graduate with a semester off for travel. It would have been IMPOSSIBLE for me to work this much and even go to school, let alone keep grades up. No need to be impressed or jealous. But thanks anyway. 👍

Hey Nut,
If you were offended by my thread, I apologize...however I am here to obtain and deliver helpful information. I don't appreciate your negativity and I am curious as to why you feel the need to attack people on SDN.

P.S. If I was looking to get my ego stroked I would simply have my wife do it.

Thank you crazy, this is precisely the type of information I was looking for.

Thanks buddy. I just got a good laugh out of one of your previous threads. The LOVE one... 😍 And just to help you out, it is possible to maintain and nurture a relationship while putting in the time to be at the top of your class. I thought about that long and hard (no pun intended) before making the decision to get married. My wife just graduated from hair school, where she went 40 hours a week, on top of working as a bartender. I also work a lot, so the time we've had during the last year hasn't been much...Point being we made the time to make it work. She has to be willing to put up with you being busy though. Anyway, good luck with that, hope it works out for you.

A 4.0 won't guarantee a spot in any dental school. It is attractive for sure, but not a guarantee at all.

these people are such jokes. if you got a 4.0 in college and you dont get 20s i think you must have something wrong with you. good luck but seriously...you know you will get in...

i agree these threads are getting old.

huh? i'm not attacking you. i'm actually agreeing with you that this thread is, indeed, really f**king stupid. 🙂

we're all here to obtain and deliver helpful information; SDN isn't substitute wife. i dont know why you're so riled up about people expressing their "negativity" here when you're the one who admitted that this thread is, in fact, stupid. isn't it expected?

"You can see my GPA and school in my signature..." LOL....i mean, come on dude....you're so transparent

if anything, your reaction pretty much proves my original point

First of all, I think you may have misunderstood what I was asking...I wasn't saying 'oh, here's my 3.9, gosh do you think I'll get in to D school?' or 'here's my stats can someone please reassure me that I have a chance...' All that I was asking was with my GPA and say a score of 19's would I be competitive in CA schools and which ones. Some people were able to respond in mature manner without calling me an ego-maniac and saying that I am here merely for an ego boost.

As for the 'You can see my GPA and school in my signature..." comment, I was trying not to be redundant...I can see now how that may have looked a little cocky, but I assure you it was not meant to be.

To answer xyla and a few others, yes I would feel like like an idiot if I got less than 20's, but I have limited study time and it could happen. I am not worried about getting in and I don't need reassurance that I will get in (somewhere)...but like everyone else I have schools of choice and want to know if entrance into those schools would be jeopardized by less than stellar scores even though I have a 3.9.

In addition, I titled the thread that way because I know how a lot of people feel about these types of threads...apparently I was right. I am glad that some were able to see it for what it was, a search for information.

In conclusion, thank you to the people who contributed useful info (i.e. crazy_sherm, gulch, eyeamcommi).

Polar, if you would like to add anything else, my PM inbox is wide open.
