I like radiology, I really do. When I spoke with my advisor they said I would have a good shot of going back to california. However, I've only gotten 1 interview so far there. I don't think I want to be a radiologist if I don't match in cali. I have very strong family ties and my wife is current there. I don't think I would be happy on the east coast for another 4-5 years.

What do you guys think I should do? Should I just only rank the one program and risk going unmatched then reapply into something less competitive next year? Or should I withdrawal my application and take 6 months off school and reapply into something else.

I really don't know what to do at this point since I messed up during the initial applications.

There's no point in withdrawing unless you don't like your one program.

Stay in this year (apply to more programs if that can still matter), plan to SOAP, and if you don't get in, then proceed to backup plan.

You have slim odds, but I don't see the point to quit before playing your hand.

what are the odds of finding a program in Cali through SOAP? I am a competitive candidate for internal medicine and I could get into a decent program in cali if I actually applied normally.

I don't believe any Cali programs end up having to SOAP. They are all very competitive.

For me, radiology is so much more desirable than almost any other specialty, particularly internal medicine, that it's difficult for me to understand going into a different field just because I want to be in a particular location. I realize that there are people who can be happy in multiple specialties, and if that is the case for you, then more power to you. I would just hate to see you sacrifice radiology, if that's what you really want, for the relatively short-term gain of being in California for the next few years. After all, we're ostensibly talking about a career that will last many decades.

Then again, only 4 out of the 12 or so California programs have even started out sending interviews...and ones that haven't started include places like Cedars Sinai and Kaiser LA, which are less competitive than the others. And the ones that have sent out interviews may be doing so in waves. Why give up already, especially given the fact that you already got an interview from one out of the four that have started?

Even the best Cali programs have unfilled prelim surgery spots if you absolutely want to be there (even for just a year). Although I'm not sure how much extra time you would have with a prelim surgery year.

I understand what your saying. I am an average candidate ya know? I don't expect to even get an interview most of those institutions. Part of me is just getting nervous.

Again I really like radiology and I know its the best fit for me. However, I regret not backing up anesthesia or internal medicine or something like that.
