Hey,

I start school Sept 2011 - I'm going for my bachelor's in Biology (all ready accepted, used to attend two years previous but dropped out because I was an idiot). After I graduate, I plan on going to grad school to obtain my master's in Biology, as I've heard that most med school won't even touch you unless you have a master's.

I am aware that I'm going to need at least a 3.7 GPA, good MCAT scores (Still not sure what is considered a "good" MCAT score. There's this beautiful med school in Vermont that I've been thinking about, and you need at least 10 or an 11, which sounds low to me), and experience in volunteering at hospitals, or community service.

I just have a few questions:

- Is it possible to ask to shadow a physician while you're in college?

- I looked into pre-med requirements...it looks like a total of six years of college before med school? Isn't it 1 year of Biology, 1 year of Chem, 2 years of Organic Chemistry, 1 year of English, etc. I know I'm planning on going to grad school...that would be factored in, correct?

- Is it too early to start preparing for the MCATS?

- Any suggestions on things I should do while I'm in college, preparing for med school?

- Is it possible to shadow surgeries while in college? I want to get as much experience as I can. I know that in high school, the AP bio students got to shadow a knee surgery.

- I know that some of the alumni of UMA (college I'm attending in 2011) have furthered their education and eventually became doctors. So I'm thinking...it doesn't really matter where you attend college, as long as you graduate with a good GPA?

Oh, and I want to go to med school so that I may become an obstetrician. I want to become an obstetrician so badly, that it makes my blood boil with excitement and anticipation. So, since I all ready know which field I'm interested in, any other suggestions?

Since I am posting in the Ob/Gyn forum, probably didn't need to mention the fact that I want to become an obstetrician. But I clarified that anyway, haha.

So...insight? Advice? Would greatly appreciate it!

you heard wrong.

Yes.

2 semesters gen chem, 2 semesters of organic chem, 2 semesters of bio, 2 semesters of english, and 2 semesters of physics for all schools. Some schools have additional requirements (usually biochem or calc)

Yes. Wait until you have some of the pre-reqs done.

you might want to try research out, if you're interested in it.

Correct. School rep is low on the list of things that matter. A good GPA is important, but really a good GPA doesn't mean **** if your MCAT score isn't decent.

Thanks!

And now I feel silly - by stating "two semesters of *this course*" they mean...one class in one semester, and then the same class the next semester. I'll be a full time student, so I'll be taking five classes a semester. Say I'll want to get my English pre-reqs out of the way, that means two english classes in one year, in consecutive (or not) semesters, right?

For some reason, I thought they meant and entire solid year of english. Like, ten classes a year. Of english. Now I see that it sounds silly lol.

The two-class pre-reqs don't necessarily have to be taken in contiguous semesters, although it's much easier to take the science classes that way so that the information is fresh.

God forbid.

Right. Just two classes of each.

speaking for myself: it is indeed a beautiful med school 😎 😍

but a 10/11 mcat score should be your goal for each of the three sections. that isn't low, it's ~85th percentile.

so, study hard next year, learn the material in your pre-reqs well so in three years or so when you take the MCAT - you'll be ready.
:luck:

That's 10-11 in each section. So it adds up to a composite of 30-33, which, as the poster above me said, is about the 85th percentile.

Ohhh, I see 🙂 - sorry if I sound kind of newbish. I actually just recently came to the realization that I wanted to become an obstetrician, so I'm new to information/requirements 🙂 - thank you 🙂 - are you currently attending the medical school in Vermont? (I am referring to this one http://www.med.uvm.edu/HP-DEPT.asp?SiteAreaID=1283)

Amazing 🙂
