Does any know of any schools that only require one faculty letter???!!! I've been looking and I seem to remember some California schools only require two instead of three. My situation is looking desperate on whether I will get the three letters. My main issue is this: one of my letter writers from last year retired and it's not looking good on whether she can access the letter (looks like it got deleted). I'd hate to have to ask her for a rewrite; I made a good impression with her, but otherwise we weren't amazingly close. Another letter writer has not emailed me back, though I'm going to try again probably. Of the three from my undergrad schooling, I have only one letter from science faculty (although it is pretty strong, I think).

This already cuts me out of applying to a bunch of schools. How poorly will this look if I apply to those schools without the reuqired letters? Should I just wait another year, hope to get into the post-bac program (see below), then hope to get good letters through that? Ugh I'm stressing SO much about this. I REALLY don't want to wait another year to apply. The thing is, I got close to a lot of my teacher's assistants and not my professors (I don't know what I was thinking). So now I'm kind of screwed when ti comes to having professors to ask for LORs. If I don't get into the post-bac, has anyone had any success with just signed up for some classes at their old university just to improve a few grades and get a couple letters?? I seriously don't know what to do.

I feel the rest of my application is decently strong enough for a lot of schools if it wasn't for the letters. I have plenty of other great letters from doctors and other people of interest, just not the DANG faculty letters. See below if you wish for some of my other stats, otherwise just answer the above question.

I applied last year to medical school and, after not hearing anything back for most of the year, finally got four interviews to UC Irvine, Eastern Virginia Medical School, Western University, and RFUMS. Only RFUMS denied me and now I'm wait listed at the rest (although obviously not expecting to get in so late in the cycle). Thus, I have begun reapplying.

My application is almost done and I'll be ready to send it in at the earliest possible time tomorrow morning with the following improvements:
  • a MUCH improved personal statement (I think)
  • I will be applying RIGHT AT the earliest possible time for secondaries and primaries, whereas last year I had most of my secondaries submitted around mid August and primary verified by late July.
  • some research experience (though short at only about 60 hours. I moved to Chile before I could get too into my research, though will be returning to the position upon arrival, unless I get into a post-bac program I applied to).
  • Another 1,500 MORE hours or so of medical scribing (around 3,000 total).
  • Became a tutor for the Huntington Learning Center for the past 8 month.
  • ENT shadowing experience (one medical school told me they would like to see more continuity of care experience in my app, which the ED does/should not provide).
  • a pretty big volunteer experience which has been added to most most significant experiences (of which there were only two in my original application)--I moved to Chile two months ago and will be here another two months. I am teaching English in the freezing winter to at-risk students in a small school, working about 36 hours per week. This is as much to improve my own Spanish for future patients as well as to impact students' lives here. I anticipate having an advanced level of Spanish upon return (I can already maintain hour-long conversations).
  • I have also been accepted to become a camp counselor at a camp for children with cancer, called Ronald McDonald Camp for Good Times, though this won't be until early August (I will mention it in secondary apps).
  • I also have applied to the SFSU post-bac program and anticipate admission.
These are the changes from my application last year, which contained the following stats (note again, these are LAST YEAR):

cGPA: 3.55
sGPA: 3.48
MCAT: 38 (30 first attempt)

50 hours PACU volunteer
1500 hours clinical experience for ED scribing
100 hours volunteer at Santa Cruz county medical society
300 hours of KZSC radio disc jockey volunteer
100 hours as KZSC mentor/TA volunteer
80 hours shadowing experience with paramedics
3 half marathons
NO RESEARCH EXPERIENCE attachFull192604

A ton of work experience (I pretty much worked during all of college) including:
Pet store employee
UCSC orientation leader
AVID tutor
Taco Hell
Central Valley After school Foundation

Forgot to mention, I applied SUPER late to DO schools but will be applying right on time this year. I would expect to get into some DO schools with those stats, but again, the letter issue...

Super late or super early, with those stats, Western should have just fallen over themselves to give you an accept.

Work on the interview skills this cycle.

Yeah I mean the thing is, I felt my Western interview went well. I could tell at least that my faculty interview went well, though MMI may have been a little off. I also felt my Eastern Interview went REALLY well, but when I called later, an admissions person told me, "you could work on your interview." She made it sound like it wasn't terrible, but it COULD use improvement. Thus, I'm sure you two are right, Goro and GynGyn. This year, I plan to seek the help of my old universities pre-health advisers to practice.

However, any advice on what to do this cycle? With the letter situation, I mean?

Without the required letters your application won't be considered complete so I doubt they'd even look at it.

GAH that is what I'm afraid of. Shoot, I really don't know what to do. Is the only option to wait until I get those?

Get those letters asap. Between a June 1 app with 1 letter and a June 20 app with 3, the choice is obvious.

I don't understand how you got a 38 on the MCAT but only a 3.48 in your science GPA?
