Alright everyone here is my issue. I posted a thread a semester ago getting advice that I had to get straight A's to get my gpa to a 3.5 or higher. Recently my mom had two heart attacks with surgery, my grandmother passed away and since the loss of my dad's job I have been working full-time. Due to this I have an A in speech, an A in world religions, a C in Chemistry (might be a D now :scared:) and a C in Calculus (also might be a D). I have had numerous problems this semester and if my grades stay at A,A,C,C my gpa will drop down to 3.0. If I get an A,A,D,D my gpa I believe will drop to 2.8. Right now I have no idea what I should do! I was planning on transferring to NIU this fall. I will have 36 credits after this semester and I don't know if I should transfer if I get a 2.8 and repeat the classes or repeat them at the community college and transfer with a better gpa. 😕 I won't be working starting next semester and grades will definately improve but I need to know if I still have a shot at an MD school. 🙁 This summer I will be volunteering heavily in a hospital since I won't be going to school.

You do still have a shot, but you have to kick ass the rest of the time you are in undergrad. Every B or C you get from now on will only make your life harder down the road. There are things after undergrad you can do to try to address your GPA, so all hope isn't lost. But it's much better and less stressful (trust me) to just address them now and buckle down and ace all your classes. Easier said than done of course

Edit: I haven't read any of your older posts. And sorry about your family 🙁

I assume you're at a junior college right now. I suggest retaking the courses that you are not doing well in. Certainly you will HAVE to retake any class in which you get a D in order for it to count for med school.

I think you still have a shot as long as you do well in those courses and do well after you transfer. Nearly every school asks for extenuating circumstances in their secondary applications. Yours are as good a reason as any for a drop in grades. I got plenty of Cs too and I didn't have an explanation at all. Then again I also haven't gotten into med school 😉

Regardless, I think you'll be okay if you remain determined and focus. Best of luck to you and your family!

I really want to become a doctor as I have said in a previous thread. I have been trying to set my priorities straight until all of these events took place. I started off really well in the semester and now I feel like all has gone to waste. I need to hit that 3.5 mark no matter what.

You might need to take a "5th year" in college to repeat classes or pull up a GPA, or do a post-bach after college, and be prepared for questions about your early grades during med school interviews. That said, if this is something you really want I don't see any reason why you can't get into medical school. Don't kick yourself too much over this semesters grades. It can be very difficult to concentrate on school when your personal life needs to take priority, and that doesn't make you a bad student. Good luck.

oh, you can do it! work ur ass off from now on! Don't worry too much abt the family - it's your time right now, if u miss- u miss it... so - dont miss it!

Ya you got this! I started out my freshman year making slightly above a 3.0. I thought that was bad, but now I've made only one B since then (the rest A's) and have managed to pull it up to a 3.77.

You've got an eternity to pull it up to a 3.5, study hard!

Dude, you are going through a lot. Good work. Not sure If I should advise you to work hard, as you already are working very hard.
Good luck; remain determined and you will get that MD someday!
