hi everyone, i am a final year medical student and want after finishing to practice ophthalmology so while i was checking sites concernedabout ophthalmology training i was confused about the following

1-what is the difference between residency and fellowship
2-The advantage of each
3-what is the requirment of each
4-which one to start with as a graduate
5-how can i apply for them

Residency is what you need to do in order to be a practicing doctor. It's not optional.

Fellowship is optional and only can be done after your residency is completed.

Residency is what you need to do in order to be a practicing doctor. It's not optional.

Well, theoretically, anybody who finishes internship could be a practicing doctor. Although these days you can't do much as a GP.

Pathology and (I believe) neuro-ophth fellowships can be completed before residency.
