Well, I just got off the phone with the Dean of Admissions, at my school of choice, and he had some upsetting news for me. It turns out that his school doesn't accept +'s into factoring GPA and also they don't factor in math into the science GPA. This of course means that a B+ is only worth 3.0 instead of a 3.5. This makes my overall GPA drop from a 3.25 to a 3.05 and my science GPA fall from a 3.3 to a 3.13. This is a profound change on my already shaky GPA that I can't really come back from. I have already done the math and if my +'s are counted I will bring my GPA's up to a 3.35 overall and a 3.5 science by the end of the fall semester.

Now to my main point.....can you please tell me how private schools (such as BU, NYU, ect.) will calculate my GPA. I won't be competitive at schools that don't look at +'s. Also does AADSAS calculate math and +'s.

Thanks a million

Unfortunately, I don't think AADSAS counts +/-.

😱 NOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!

I guess I was left in the dark about this because I have never filled out an aadsas. Tennessee doesn't go through aadsas.
🙁

When AADSAS calculates your grades there are two GPAs, with quality points (+/-) and without (A,B,C, ect). It is up to the school to decide which GPA they use. I would think that most schools use GPAs w/o quality points. UF I know uses only w/o.

I would not stress it too much unless you did not do well on the DAT. Sure your grades are important... But make sure you have strong ECs (LEADERSHIP!!!!) and good volunteer time, research, ect and you will be fine.

How do I know this?
Overall: 2.96
Science: 3.32
DAT: 19/20/19

I made it no problem.... Keep your head up.

aadsas calculates several gpa's, including BCP (also known as science gpa), cumulative with +/-, and cumulative without +/-. So every school will see all of these aadsas gpa's as well as the gpa on your transcript from your undergrad. Then it's up to each school as to which one they like to look at (but i don't know specifics for which school does what). hope that clarifies a little for the future applicants 🙂

B+=3.5? I thought B+'s were 3.33? 😕

well if the school doesnt look at +/- and therefore gpas appear lower... wouldnt everyone be in the same boat? say the average is a 3.5 and now its a 3.3 or whatever, everyone else will decrease as much as u do

NOOOOOO....I have more +'s than -'s...now I am really freaking out!

Why would the dental schools not look at the quality points?...It's in the conversion table for AADSAS and it seems fair...Can anyone verify this?

it could go both ways...what if you have lots of B-'s and A-'s! 😱

Some people have LOTS of + which help their GPA. When the school looks at the GPA without +/-... their GPA goes down.

😛 It only seems fair because you have lots of +'s on your transcript. 😛

I in fact do have a fair amount of leadership experience and plenty of volunteer work. Also my DAT is 21/21/23. To tell you the truth, I think it has a lot more to do with which school you are applying to as far as the consideration given to extra cur. activities. The school that I want to go to I think may not care very much.

Does anybody know of any schools that take +'s into consideration. It seems a little unfair that they would, now that I have thought about it, but I still need to go to a school.

I have a dumb question......I was just looking at NYU's website and it said that I could send in an application as late as march 1st. What do you guys think because I don't want to waste my money.

Have you even submitted your application? That is VERY late. You still have a chance, but it is very slim.

This is horrible. I had C+ on some of my intro science courses and now they'll be C that really sucks.

I have LOTS of C+'s and B+'s, and they really don't count for much. It all gets bumped down in the end. Also I retook those C's and got A's but AADSAS will only average the two courses, not replace them. It's totally unfair but that is just how you have to play the game. 😳

Don't worry. You will still get your fair share of interviews.

At my school the grades are 3.0, 3.3, 3.7, 4.0. I talked to a dental school rep. and this is how they explained the +/- on aadsas gpa. This grading scale works against me just as much as it works for me and is, overall, the same as other grading scales. For example, If I get a 3.3, the d-school has no idea whether or not that would have been a 3.5 at other schools. I could have just missed a 3.7 which would have been a 3.5 at other schools. However, this helps if I would have just missed a 3.5 I get a 3.3 rather than the 3.0 I would have gotten with the other grading scale. If your school grades based on 3.0,3.5, 4.0 your with +/- gpa on aadsas will be the same as your without +/- gpa. It will differ if the grading scale is like at my school. From what i've heard, d-schools look at whatever gpa your school actually uses not the alternative gpa which aadsas calculates. Again, that's just from my experience in speaking with dental school reps. hope this helps.

I always thought that AADSAS factors in MATH as a science class for you? I dont understand how you got it to factor in somewhere else? I'd love to know because I didnt do so hot in a math class many years ago and that is killing my GPA, my science GPA would be much higher with that math class being mixed in with the regular classes, which would go down as a result, but i'd rather have my science gpa be higher...

well, look at it this way, if it drops your GPA then it drops everyone elses.

Therefore your on equal playing field.

If your still not competitive then sorry.

Take out a loan and apply to every school if you really want it, or move to a state that has low applicants and become an in-state applicant a year later and apply.

If you dont want to do this then do something else for a living, thats my advice.

Thanks a lot for your amazing insight. Maybe I should restate my original post....WHICH SCHOOLS CALCULATE WITH +'S AND IS IT TO LATE TO SEND OFF AN APPLICATION TO SCHOOLS LIKE NYU THAT HAVE LATE DEADLINES.

AADSAS factors in math as science but not as BCP.

AADSAS calculates two GPAs (one with +/-'s and one without) for its participating dental schools. Dental schools will see both GPAs and no where can you find it in writing that says they only look at one over the other. Just do the best you can with your classes.

Also, it is really late to be sending in applications, but you could try!...the worst thing that could happen is that you just have to apply again in 5 months!
