i really need a second opinion. I am currently in my second year of pharmacy school and seriously feel depressed every time i remember that i am going to be a pharmacist. I am doing really well in all my classes but i just cannot stand the idea of being a pharmacist and really really am considering dropping out and applying to med school, which is what i initially wanted to do. sometimes i wonder what I am doing in pharmacy school! Is it crazy to drop out or should I go for it?

Only you can figure this out, no one can tell you what is the right thing to do. How long are you gonna remain to be a kid and let other people direct your life.

If I were you I would keep studying and going to class but on my study breaks I would peruse the threads of the current first and second year med students. Then in couple days I would move up the ranks to the residents. You should quickly get a feel for what it is that sucks the most for them and what it is that they aspire to. If you want to join them the momentum will take you. Your lucky to have these tools.

At this stage of the game I would leave pharmacy and press on with med school.

Finish out the semester and pursue medical school.

Do you already have a bachelor's degree?

If you are already a P2 why not just finish pharmacy school? Odds are if you haven't taken the MCAT or taken steps towards a med school app it may be too late to apply. If you apply next year why not just finish pharmacy school? If you apply P3 year you would start med school in what would be your P4 year, just 1 year away. Having a PharmD may be beneficial when it comes to a med school application and would possibly be a good source of part time income if you worked while in med school.

I've personally played with the idea of medical school after pharm school (oncology and internal med are things that I am considering), but if I did that I would finish my PharmD first.

Sit in on some medical school classes. Speak with some medical students.

I think if you were to talk to current physicians they would tell you not to pursue the medical field. The reason for this is the move towards an eventual one payer system and the socialization of medicine. When Obamacare fails they will say they didn't go far enough. The US was where people from around the world came for the quality of our healthcare. This will no longer be the case in a few short years if this isn't fixed.

Is your point that medicine won't pay well because of the ACA?

Ironic coming from the pharm forums. 😕

This is easy...take it from a pharmacist who hates his job....drop out of pharmacy and do med school. That's what I should have done. I was contemplating the same thing when I was in your shoes.

You don't have to drop out to apply for med school. However, you need a convincing reason to apply to med school.
