I will be graduating with a b.s. biology in may. I have made a recent decision to go on to medical school, but I will obviously not be able to apply until the 2005 school year. I have already secured excellent letters of recommendation, etc. from my pre-health department at undergrad, but now I don't know what to do. A good friend is helping me with the whole process, but I need to decide what to do for the next year. I think I have a good chance of getting in to med. school with my credentials.

The major problem I am having is that I may be offered a 2year position at Hershey Med. as a research technician. I understand this is not going to work if I want to go to med. school, but it is a great opportunity and I am worried about the consequences if I turn it down and then do not get accepted to med. school, not really consequences for myself b/c I know I want to go to med. school; more or less I have made the decision to go and haven't told my family yet so they will not be so happy when I tell them I declined the position to apply for a chance at med. school.

To go on...I am thinking of a post-bacc program for the time in between, obviously, so I need advice on areas in SE PA to go to post bacc, I already looked at Bryn Mawr, but what are some other alternatives. Also, is there any alternative to a post-bacc program that would not involve so much money just to improve my chances at getting in to medical school. I will be the first in my family to ever attempt med. school and only the second to go to college so obviously this whole ordeal is making my family very nervous money wise...

I just need lots of advice...😕

Sound like you have completed the necessary prerequisites for medical school. I guess I do not know what your grades are, but if they are not as high as you would like, consider a masters program. I believe Bryn Mawr is for those students who did not major in the sciences and need to complete the necessary classes for admission into medical school. If you wait until next year to apply, the soonest you would matriculate would by around September of 2005. So, ask your potential employer if they would agree to lesser terms. Sounds like a great opportunity, and I am sure they would understand. Otherwise, choose your priorities wisely. Good luck with everything.

Hey,

Come to Penn!!! It's great here, and if you can get a job at Penn, you can take classes (up to two per term) for free. It starts the first term after you are hired (i.e., you have to be hired before the first day of term). There are tons of evening courses, including an entire post-bac pre med and lots of more advanced science courses, plus if you're a research tech you can probably negotiate for time during the day to go to a class if you really want to. The post-bac courses here are very well taught.

Also, you get into the college of general studies (which will let you enroll for the courses, there's a seperate app for the official post bac) pretty automatically as an employee with a college degree.

Best,
Anka
