So, after pretty much deciding against my pre-med status (after much thought and consideration), nursing feels like it would be more in line with me. It has taken me a long time to reach this decision, but there is a problem... I'm a junior, and declared anthropology as my major last semester. Because I have been so indecisive about my career choices, I chose to pursue this degree out of sheer interest, and I understand it to be a good liberal arts degree as well. I won't even graduate for at least two years, meaning I will still have to go back and compete for my university's Second-Degree BSN program, which is 5 semesters. It makes me sick to think about this, but that would mean I won't even have a job for 4.5 years (at the earliest). Two degrees in 6.5 years... ugh.

My rationale is that this is the only time in my life that I will have to the opportunity to study what actually interests me (not that nursing doesn't, but I hope you see what I'm saying), so I would really like to get my BA in Anthropology. But because of time and effort, do you think it would be worth it? Should I just scratch the BA in Anthro and switch my major to Nursing as soon as possible? I've really been wrestling with this, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

PS: Sorry for the long-windedness.

what would you use the anthropology degree for? probably nothing. thats a lot of time and money to waste on just interest. instead of spending the time finishing the anthropology degree, why not start working on the nursing degree now? you could take anthropology as a minor if its really important to you. start taking your sciences now, (anatomy, chemistry, micro ect), these tend to be the biggest headache. you could probably finish your BSN in about 3 years this way.

hmmm... i guess i COULD double major. maybe i should just go talk to my advisor... haha

Or get a minor in anthropology. For my BS I had to declare a minor.

I did anthro(medical anthro) as an undergrad major because it was interesting and left lots of room to meet all my prereqs for pa school. I actually ended up with more bio classes than my (then girlfriend now) wife, a bio major.
although it is interesting, if your goal is to be a nurse switch to nursing and take a few anthro classes now as electives then you can always take more someday after you start working. I still go back to school every few yrs for a semester or 2 to take classes at a local community college just because I find them interesting.....of course interesting to me at this point is things like genetics, advanced microbio, stats, specialty physics courses, etc.....I figure after I retire someday I will start taking fun fluff courses again....

i woulda said do the anthro degree first, but from ur wording it sounds as if having a "real" job is something that is more urgent.

switch majors......dont talk to an advisor, most advisors/counselors are the weirdest people around with meaningless jobs (from Clerks) 😀 😀

go shadow a nurse, u may find out that its not for you or that it really is. see what nurses really do before you spend the next year or so taking nursing pre-reqs. also try to see what they do in more than one specialty (ED, OR, ICU, ONC, etc)
