hey whats up everyone. Im a 3rd year med student down here in puerto rico. Im really interested in pursuing a career in PM&R... maybe possibly going for a sports or pain fellowship. I have lots of questions and I appreciate any help I can get...

I have a 210 step 1..Ive done some research and I know that I should be somewhat competitive with this score but I did my first two years at a caribbean school... kicked butt and made some good grades and ended up transferring to an LCME approved school here in PR starting as a 3rd year student... Do you think this will hurt my chances of obtaining a PM&R residency?

In terms of choosing a location for residency... should i be looking to do my residency at univ. X if my ultimate goal is to obtain a fellowship at Univ X? how important is it to do your residency at a program that has the fellow you want?

appreciate everything. thanks

thanks for the reply prefontaine. anyone else have advice on question 2? thanks

you should go talk to Dr. Frontera. I heard he might know something about PM&R (haha). Seriously though, get a strong letter from him and you will do well in the match.

It might place you slightly below American grads, but given the historically high number of IMGs in PM&R, good scores and being from America will count for you.

Being at a particular Univeristy might help your chances of getting fellowship at the same place. You would need to ask them historically where their grads go for fellowship and where fellows come from. Sometimes it's better to go somewhere else and avoid the inbreeding.

thanks docjay and PMR4 msk.

who is Dr. Fontera and what program does he work at? anyone have any input on the univ. of houston PM&R program and its pain/sports fellow? did some research on frieda but havent found any info on the program regarding interviews and resident's experience.

thanks

oh yeah, sorry, forgot to introduce myself to the PM&R community on this forum. My name is Octavio. Im an avid runner, surfer and lover of all sports especially football and bball... and taking long walks on the beach... im kidding. I'm currently living in puerto rico so if anyone is planning on taking a vacation down here in the future to check out the sports fellowship down here let me know and Ill be glad to show you around

Ok, Im guessing Dr. Frontera is the dean and head of PM&R here at univ. of PR. thanks doctorjay. it would be extremely hard on me financially to come back to PR for a fourth year elective... that sucks

Agree, Dr. Frontera would be a great resource.

RUSK takes a resident from PR every year, there are 2 in my class, and both of them are chiefs. You should do a rotation if you can.
