hey... i just thought of this, and looked for a medical forum

i suffer from the worst allegies
and since u guys are med students, i hope u can help

i take 10mg of zyrtec which doesn't help

i added sudafed decongestive
to try and help calm the stuffy nose i get from the allergies and the sneezing

that doesn't work either

got some flonase nose spray to add to the previous combo and NOTHING

i feel like everytime i sneeze my back is going to break. its not an unbearable pain, just nerve recking and un comfortable

anything i can do to atleast EASE the sneezing?

try to stay indoors as much as possible early morning and late afternoons...you may also want to invest in an air purifier to have in you room, clearing it of allergens...if its too bad, i would consider seeing an allergist

well is there any more advice? i mean will the amt of pollen decrese? im worried about hte summer. will my allergies lighten up as the season moves on?

From someone who has used virtually every allergy medicine ever I can tell you this; Zyrtec sucks (at least it didn't help me any). Claritin sucks even worse. Try Allegra or Allegra D (has a decongestsant in it).

Also see an alergy specialist. Get a skin test done to find out what is causing the problem and try to avoid those situations. The nurse freaked out when she came and checked on me 5 minutes into the skin test and my entire back was red. Of the 48 samples on skin test battery I was not allergic to cedar and oak woods and pigs. Otherwise every grass, domestic animal, pollen, environmental toxin (smoke and dust), and about every tree, and all but one farm animal I am allergic to.

Allergies suck. Period. Peace.

I have awful seasonal allergies as well and have tried most of the precription medications available. They were all useless. In all my experience, the best medication is simple over-the-counter allergy tablets with chlorpheniramine maleate. Some tablets have both this antihistamine and sudafed which work well together. The only downside is that the anithistamine tends to make me drowsy. You may also want to try chromium nasal sprays, which worked a little for me. I wouldn't bother with controversial "allergy shots" unless you have a lot of patience and don't mind if years of shots don't pay off. Hope that helps...

Ha! This thread reminds me of the assuming-pre-meds-have-medical-knowledge thread ...

My experience is that Zyrtec and Flonase work really well, but Allegra did squat and Claritin stopped working after a while. Maybe you are my allergy-med anti-matter twin ... you can get Claritin OTC now. I know how much allergies suck. Definitely see an allergist about it. Good luck. 🙂

It must be individual dependant, b/c Zyrtec and Allegra did squat for me, while Claritin has worked great.

I have really weird allergies--only my eyes burn during the pollen season. I've tried all the new prescription drugs and nothing works. The only drug that does is one of the oldest: Chlor-trimeton. They have it in all of the drug stores in different doses. I take the 4 hour pill, and it works better than anything else out there.

Give it a try, it will probably work.

Chlortrimeton!!!!

The strongest antihistamine in the market is STILL diphenhydramine (Benadryl). Unfortunately, the majority of patients who take it will experience the side effects (drowsiness). That's why the Allegra/Claritin/Zyrtec/Clarinex prescriptions are so effective, because they do not cause the SE that benadryl does (but are less effective).

Ask your primary care physician for a referral to an allergist/immunologist, or to see an ENT specialist. You may have an anatomic abnormality that may interfere with proper drainage.

Good luck!

Q, DO

I also have very bad springtime allergies, eyes and asthma mainly. Being in North Carolina for four years landed me in the ER more times than I had my entire life.

When I was younger and up until last year I got a shot of depo-medrol. You can ask your doctor about it. It's a steroid. I got it just once at the beginning (or as close to the beginning of the allergy season as possible). That in combination with some eye drops and an inhaler (with an occasional anti-histamine) worked wonders.

Unfortunately, steroids on a chronic basis are bad for your immune system (e.g. President Kennedy's ailments). But, if you're that bad as far as allergies go (as I was) then it might be worth one shot. Ask your doc.

BTW, the depo-medrol is an IM shot and slow acting, it takes a week or so to work.

closing. posted in multiple forums.

also, SDN forums are not for answering medical questions of this kind. you really need to ask your personal physician.
