Did anybody else do a double take on this question on the NRMP survey? I remember seeing a thread about this before, and I don't know why anybody would think they could benefit from ranking a program at which they did not interview, but I guess it's common enough to be part of the survey.

I wonder if it's in the same vein as the "I ranked places I thought I was likely to match highly as a safety net" (Can't remember the wording, exactly) questions. Maybe they want to catch how many people just don't understand the match concept.

Yeah, there are clearly questions that questioned whether people understood the instructions/concepts of the match, perhaps with the goal of improving instructions to better avoid confusion.

It's also a way of finding out if people are ranking programs simply to have access to the scramble list. I ranked an advanced program last time around in a field I wasn't even interested in (derm, for the record, not that they needed their stats skewed any further), just to get the list. If I'd only ranked prelims, NRMP would have considered me "fully matched" and I wouldn't have had access.

Edit: it also reveals if there are any matches happening outside of normal channels.

What purpose does the last question( about one's own probability of matching) on the Survey serve?

I'm not really sure. I wonder if they are seeing if the applicants looked at the previous year's match data and are properly estimating their chances based on how many places they ranked, etc. ???

I think it's interesting to know if people are over- or underestimating their chances.

Was anyone ballsy enough to put 100%?

I also put down 100% sure of matching... it will be interesting for the nrmp to look back and see which of the 100% sure did not actually match and see what makes that group tick.

Ranking somewhere you didn't apply or interview screws up the stats of that field... and the med schools? Do they get stats info like that?

I thought about ranking places I got rejected at...like maybe somehow I would accidentally end up on their rank list and match. How awesome would that be to show up July 1st and have them wondering who the heck you are!😀 It was just a thought though, never seriously considered it.

What about sending them a "You're my number 1" letter? That would be hilarious! :meanie:
