Hey guys this is my first post!
I have recently become really interested in becoming a PT. I would like to hear some of your thoughts on my story to know if I have a shot.
Right now, I have a 2.6 cumulative GPA. My major is child and family studies and my minor is English. I attend UT at the Permian Basin. My first semester I was pre-med and I really messed up my GPA because of being so nervous. Our pre-med advisor wasn't the greatest and basically scared most of us out of any health profession. Our pass rate of general chemistry is less than 30%. I made an A in the lab and I have failed lecture twice. This coming fall, we have a new professor coming in that is supposed to be way better than our last two. I made a C in bio 1 lecture and lab. I made an A in statistics and psychology. I have a lot of psychology credits that are A's and B's. If I retake my chem credit my GPA should go up a few points. After this semester I will be a senior and I have some 'elective' credits I can fill with the rest of the pre reqs. If I get my GPA up would I have a pretty good chance getting into the Texas Tech HC here in the Permian Basin? What does their students Stats look like?

Btw I'm also 20. I'm graduating college a year early. And I just got elected for student senate! Should I give up now and apply for PTA school?

there are tons of threads on stories just like yours throughout the forum, so read to your hearts delight. But basically you will need to get both your cumulative gpa and especially your pre-req gpa up to at least a 3.2, preferably a 3.5 to be competitive.

Okay thank you! Also,
I've heard from my school that if we retake a class at a CC it doesn't help our GPA.. Is this true?

Generally I don't think that would be the case...

What do you anticipate your GPA will be across your junior and senior years? This is referred to as a 2-year GPA. Students who did horribly in their first 2 years of college can salvage a strong application (at some PT schools) by doing well in the last 2 years. The cummulative GPA will not increase much, but the GPA over the final 2 years can be outstanding. This can indicate a student's eagerness/readiness to study.

When it comes to calculating GPA every PT school is different. When it comes to your science pre-req GPA the schools will either take the first grade, average the two grades, or take the highest. You need to talk to Tx Tech to find out how they calculate GPAs. That's a simple email.

I used to work in the advising department at my undergraduate institution so I may be able to help. When they say retaking at a community college won't help, it means it will not help your GPA at your school. Say you got an F and retook it at your school and got an A, your school GPA would reflect an A since it replaces the F. If you retook it at a community college and got an A you should show an F at your school and an A at the community college thus not helping your undergrad GPA at your school. Does that make sense?? However when you apply to PT schools they make just look at the higher grade. But the depends on the school.

I have a 3.14 / 3.11, with Cs in three prerequisite courses. By some miracle I got accepted. I am still trying to make sure it's not some cruel April Fool's joke.

But by all means, don't give yourself the worst chance possible. Try to get 3.4-3.5+ on prerequisite GPA, same for overall if possible. Don't shrug off the GRE either.

Good luck and work hard!
