I saw the most annoying, disturbing job posting.

I was browsing a jobs website and saw a posting for a medical assistant job at an allergists office that was advertised as "internship for premed students".

What was disturbing was that they flat out said in the posting "DO NOT RESPOND UNLESS YOU HAVE A CUMULATIVE 3.4 GPA".

Furthermore, they instruct applicants to do the following: "THE SUBJECT LINE OF YOUR EMAIL MUST SAY "MY GPA IS ___(FILL IN THE NUMBER)"

Medical schools don't even have this sort of strict cutoff (that they will admit), so who the hell are these a$$holes to eliminate candidates based solely on GPA?

Well, thankfully I have a 3.4 GPA but I decided to try a different approach at landing this job.

The subject of my email was the following:

MY GPA IS "go **** yourself"

And here is my content:

I know many qualified medical school applicants who
don't have your requisite "3.4" gpa. I also know
people who were admitted to top medical schools with
less than a "3.4". For you to say that we must include
our GPA in the email subject is sickening, especially
for your pathetic office job. You clearly have no
understanding of what makes an individual a complete,
caring, and highly competent physician - here's a
hint: it's not a 3.4 GPA.

I'll let you guys know if I get the job.

LOL!!

lol, i doubt they'll get to the content.

I agree that GPA is not the only thing that medical schools are looking for, however you can not deny that GPA is somewhat representing how successfull you are during the college. Ofcourse, I still find this cut off thing stupid. Why 3.4?

So post the link (or coyp the text) so that we can all "apply" in a similar fashion! 😀

jbing's approach to the matter is just as shortsighted as the requirements listed -- simply juvenile and uncouth behavior towards things that are less than perfect in this world. perhaps a 3.4 is not the best indicator of success, but the attitude definitely reflects poorly.

let's not overthink the situation, shall we? I think his crass response was in the same vein as such a crass declaration of criterion.

i know somebody who got a job and their salary was a direct multiple of their undergrad gpa. this was a full time career type job, not a summer internship or anything....

You have got to be kidding me.

Maybe they don't want to bother trying to figure out exactly why this a 3.4 person has such a gpa (disadvantaged, hard courses, hard major, etc...).

The end is near :scared:

Bummer on the GPA thing. Life is not fair.

I was offered a job, as an Occupational Therapist, in a hospital, way back in 1999, with the doctor saying "You all have the same degree but you had the highest GPA. Congrats."

At least this internship is letting you know up front....

ok this is totally off topic but it has to do with wierd job postings. last fall i was looking for random part time work so i looked on craigs list and found a post for promotional advertising/modeling and i was like ok ive modeled before how hard can this be? so i go to the interview, which by the way is right by the manolo blahnik store in midtown so i figure it cant be that bad. i walk up the building and realize there is a lot of really hot furniture for some shady people. well to make a long story short, it turned out to be an AD FOR AN ESCORT SERVICE!!! i was like wtf. i love you manhattan.

You are my hero. You are the hero to all who have below a 3.4. I love you

So did you get the job?

I don't see what the big deal is. TONS of scholarships have a strict GPA requirement, so do honors societies, etc. Plus we all know that most screening schools just use GPA and MCAT.

I don't really see how its unfair or rude of them. They want to get a qualified person who is hard working and see GPA as an easy indicator.

Yeah same, I remember reading a whole number of job postings last year on my undergrad career services website that said "you must have a 3.5 or above to apply for this position." Simple as that.

I think the GPA cutoff is a good idea. Gets rid of alot of headache applications who most likely wouldn't be motivated/ambitious enough anyway. This isn't secondary apps where you pay them to review your application.

Stop resurrecting 2 year old posts, it was before your time.

Don't you have some kids to yell at for "playing that gosh darn music too loud" or something?

Just broke the cutoff, where is this job? I think I will apply

You're right that medical schools dont have this cutoff, but if your GPA is < 3.5, many would either discourage you from going into medschool, or at least convince you to not get your hopes up.
^ is basically me regurgitating what a premed advisor told me.

they flat out said in the posting "DO NOT RESPOND UNLESS YOU HAVE A CUMULATIVE 3.4 GPA".

Take that, you silly 4.0's! Your GPA is way too high to get this job. Get it down to exactly 3.4 and we'll consider you for the position.

My engineering internship with a Fortune 100 company required a 3.5 to be competitive. When I graduated, the same company required a 3.3 just to get an interview for employment.

Just saying that GPA cutoffs aren't uncommon.

I saw this thread and that I had posted in it, and I couldn't remember when that would have been
