I'm a senior and was enrolling in classes for autumn quarter today when I realized I could not enroll in biochemistry I, which is only offered in fall.

It turns out I did not meet the prerequisites. On my course catalogue there are two biochemistry I classes (Chem 181 vs Chemeng 181). Exact same descriptions but one of them says pre-reqs are hard coded while the other does not.

I am applying this cycle and if I get in that means I will not be able to finish my prereqs in time if I am not able to take biochem this fall. I'm begging my school to let me take the class, but if that does not work, should I just apply to every dental school that does not require biochem?

God I'm screwed...

By the way, I am missing 2 of the prereqs. Last quarter of ochem and 1 quarter of physical chemistry (which I was not planning on taking since most dental schools dont require it).

If anyone has ideas, please let me know.

Is there another college nearby that you could take Biochem at instead? Or maybe over the summer, before dschool starts?

I'm taking summer school currently but the classes Im taking I can take during the school year. However, the school nearby me does not offer biochem anyways.

For the summer before dental school, I thought most dental schools start pretty early in the summer like June so is there even time to do that? I guess some schools start in August and I can find a summer session from June to July like the one I am in.

Yeah, most do start pretty early. Try talk to your school/the prof first - hopefully they'll let you take Biochem there. (Can you go for the class where the pre-reqs aren't hard-coded?)

Just tried all 5 or 6 listings and I actually got into one!

Hopefully they wont realize it after my email saying to please let me in. I couldnt imagine why they would remove me though. Only one of the listings said it was hard-coded for sure. And the concept of prereqs is ridiculous in the first place.

Either way, I can breathe easier now.

Are you at some huge university with a million students in a class, or are you at a small university?

This is one of those times when it's really, really convenient to go to a small school where you know your professors.

Im glad you got in but if you don't complete the prereqs you can be kicked out the first day of class.

Even at my large university I was able to take the classes that I wanted by petitioning to have my pre-reqs waived.

small school and yup this ended up being key.

So I just asked the professors and department head up front about this and they said theyll let me in as long as I dont ask the TAs for ochem help. So now I'm officially good! Thanks everyone.
