So there I was, watching my first LP ever, on an unconscience patient. 30 minutes of vertibrae grinding observation later, the 2 residents are still unsuccessful and trying to figure out what to do. So I pipe up. Maybe a little beginner's luck will help? Sure they say, get on some gloves. So I do.... well, I try. sweaty hands and small gloves = rugby looks like an idiot for about 5 minutes. embarassing. then glove rips. s**t. ok, no problem, new pair. try number 2, not better than the first. takes a little longer for the glove to rip. f**k. they offer me a 3rd pair, but I say, if I can't get gloves on, I am not sticking a needle in some guys back. they agree. I watch for an other 15 minutes before announcing my departure. I asked if they had any other gloves to rip before I go. They didn't.
I suck.

Don't be so hard on yourself. We all have these stories, somedays just aren't your day.

I wouldn't feel bad about it, if they don't have big enough gloves, they don't have big enough gloves! I fail to see how that is your fault. I just finished pedi neuro and in the NICU all they have are small gloves since all the nurses up there have tiny hands...I didn't blame myself for the fact that the gloves didn't fit! (Not to mention the utter futility of attempting any sort of neuro exam on a neonate 🙄) If you really want to learn to do LP's I'm sure you'll have more chances in the future.

you shouldn't worry about it. but i am surprised that sterile gloves ripped on you. i mean, the sizing issue must have been really out of whack, because the sterile gloves are much stronger than the typical box gloves. so, the fact that they did rip means it certainly was not your fault. anyone should understand that. if you weren't using sterile gloves, then you most certainly made a good choice by leaving the room

You obviously have small hands. Those gloves rip, esp at the wrist, pretty readilly. OP, it probably pays to snag an appropriately sized pack of gloves next time you are at the supply closet -- that's what the inside pocket of the white coats are for.

Do you know your glove size? I'd always go with a nice packaged sterile pair, and not use the stupid cheap gloves that come in those LP, Foley, etc. kits.

Agree with law2doc-I used to rip gloves all the time, until I started carrying an emergency pair in my coat-now people just look at me all funny when I tell them my glove size is 8 or 8 1/2. Just invest in a couple pair for just in case times.
