I think I have forgotten just about everything from MS1

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I will join the club and say I've forgotten all of MS1. Try and ask me what muscle/nerves are in the pelvis and I'd look at you with a blank stare. Or all those damn CNS tracts. How about all the diffferent sections of the thalamus?

The good news? Ask many physicians basic*science material or even anatomy questions and most will also respond with blank stares.

It'll come easier the second time you learn it. Just gotta ace it for Step I and it won't be as important after that.

Yeah, I've got nothing from M1 outside of phys and some really basic anatomy. Maybe a couple cancer markers and some basic histo. That's about it.

This is all relieving to hear as I feel the same way. MS2 begins in 2 weeks!

Do any of you review the material from MS1 over the summer before MS2?

Story of my life. As soon as the exams are finished all the info is vanishing into the ether.

MS1 is low yield

Not true. There is a ton of MS1 material on Step 1

I really disagree with this. In my experience, many attendings have a very solid understanding of basic science. You should try your best to hold onto this knowledge as long as you can (although a lot will inevitably fade as you learn clinical medicine). Without this knowledge, you're just some technician that follows flowcharts...

MS1 material except for physio is all crammable stuff before Step 1. Don't worry about biochem, anatomy, embryo until it's Step 1 time.

you'd be surprised how much you actually remember or how quickly it comes back when you start studying for step 1

also i would caution you about thinking that MS1 stuff is low yield for step 1. the first section of FA (the part before systems) is heavily tested and you need to know it as well as anything else to do well

I think it depends where you're at and who you're talking to. Academic docs who have research labs tend to retain a lot of the basic science stuff because they deal with it in basic science/clinical research/clinical practice. I think my favorite quote from anatomy lab was when they brought in an OB doctor during the pelvis portion. I pointed to a random nerve in the region and asked her if she knew what it was. Her reply: "Ummmm, no idea. I just deliver babies."

Well I guess it depends on how your curriculum is structured.

The part before the organ systems is behavioral, biochem, embryo, micro, immuno, path, and pharm. At my school we only cover biochem and embryo 1st year, everything else on the list is covered 2nd year.

I looked in first aid...the MS1 stuff in there is probably only 10% of the stuff we learned in class. Aka its very obvious stuff compared to my ms1 exams.

The ONLY things from MS1 I am looking at before usmle time is micro and neuro...and micro comes up all over path anyways. In fact, path covers a HUGE portion of the "important" stuff from ms1...And we do physio MS2 anyways...

So I stand by my current statement that MS1 is low yield 😀

oh good point. we cover all but pharm and micro.

First section of first aid is extremely easy compared to MS1 exams, at my school at least
