I was just watching the PCOM CD that came with the supplemental invite. They pronounce each letter of PCOM, like P-C-O-M. I've always pronounced it P-COM, C-COM, L-E-COM, etc. I know this is stupid but now I'm intrigued as to how other people pronounce it.

I started off by calling it P-COM, but was corrected by someone..i cant remember. So, now I actually spell it out one letter at a time. P-C-O-M..not sure why that is, but hey whatever works
 
Maybe they think it sounds more prestigious to say "P-C-O-M." I still say P-COM, even after being corrected. SDNers are going to be referring to it as "J-P-COM" soon.
 
I had a similar concern about TCOM. Turned out no one really cared during the interview - it never came up. I might listen to how the admissions staff refer to the college during the pre-interview presentations. That's what I did for what it's worth.

If I'm lucky enough to get interviews I think that's what I'll do. I'm a student at UNT-Health Science Center and I call it T-COM. I had just never thought about it before and I wasn't sure if I was the only one.

:laugh: When I was looking at the different parts of the CD I was almost expecting JP's picture and name to show up somewhere.
 
From what I understand here at PCOM the admin likes to call it that because it accents the O which stands for Osteopathic medicine and not just Of medicine.

I go here and I still call it P-COM so do what you will, not sure if they would honestly care in an interview, but you might as well do as they like...

Thanks Animus! The students on the cd also referred to it as P-C-O-M too so I wasn't sure. If I was a student there I'm sure I would still call it P-COM. I hadn't actually thought of finding out from someone who is a student there.
 
Ahhh... I remember a similar question from last year. 🙂

I don't think here's any rule. I also started out calling all the schools as bisyllabic words, e.g. K-COM, P-COM, etc., and I got pretty used to it. However, I began to hang out with more folks who called my school by enunciating all the letters of the abbreviation, e.g., K-C-U-M-B. This changed my habit at last for my school. 😀
 
PCOM wants to make it clear that they are not a dot com corporation, so thats why they spell out PCOM, they told us this in orientation. So if you're interviewing just say P.C.O.M.

Hmmm interesting. Although I never would have thought of that I guess it does make sense.
 
I always pronounced it K-COM until I went to interview and everyone there was spelling it out K-C-O-M. I pronounce them all in my head like that, K-com, P-com, C-com, T-com.

On a related subject, I always prounced "osteopathy" like "osteo-path-E", not the correct "ostey-ah-pah-thee". I felt like a big '**** at Kirksville, having found out that I prounounced everything wrong.
 
Just make sure you call it "Pee-See-Oh-Em" in your interview.
 
I know for sure the LECOM is LE-COM!
 
I made this discovery a week or so ago. PCOM was at our school and the rep kept pronouncing it P-C-O-M. I kept thinking wtf. It's P-COM. Just say PCOM. But now reading what you guys have written, it makes sense that they're wanting to enforce the osteopathic part of the title. . Are there any other schools, beside LECOM, that don't pronounce each letter?

Is NOVA N-O-V-A or NOVA?

When I interviewed at NOVA, they acutually preferred "NSU-COM" to "NOVA."
 
I think UNECOM sounds like "you-nuh-com". I pronounced it that way during an interview and then had an "oh-$hit" moment and thought maybe I was supposed to spell the whole thing out like U-N-E-C-O-M, but the interviewer just smiled at me an nodded, so I must have gotten it right.

Yeah, I remember at my interview last year, the president of the school made a big deal that it was C-C-O-M and not C-COM (although like many others I had pronounced it that way in my head).

At SOMA, we call it "SOMA" (S-O-M-A just doesn't roll off the tongue).
 
EEL08, I've totally wondered the same thing. I remember thinking that about the PCOM DVD also!

I only interviewed at DMU (pronounced D-M-U) and DCOM (pronounced D-COM). So I didn't mispronounce either one, but I would have been screwed if I interviewed at PCOM. 😳
 
What about AZCOM? I've been calling it AZ-COM to friends, but are you supposed to pronounce it A-Z-COM?
 
At GA-PCOM, It totally depends on what kind of day we're having. On good days it's G.A. - P.C.O.M or Georgia - P.C.O.M or Georgia Campus, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine......on bad days it's GAP - COM (no initials pronounced) 😉 Those of you coming here, however, remember that you go to GA-PCOM....NOT PCOM-GA (which is what a lot of us put when we first applied and got in there).

When I was there for my interview, they told us that they are not a "X-COM like LECOM but P-C-O-M." I think it is just a way to be unique or annoying...one of the two.

haha... i was vigorously corrected about this P-C-O-M business at an osteopathic school fair on campus. mind your Ps and Qs folks 🙂

AZ-COM baby!! I hate to say it folks but P-C-O-M AND C-C-O-M sound a little pretentious to me. I have yet to have anyone think I'm talking about a dot com when I say I'm going to AZCOM. And apparently I'm not into the sciences enough to think of cecum when I say C-COM. 😛 Anyway I was quite surprised to see my thread come back from the grave. 😉

:laugh: Wow, I just realized this thread was super old!

On another note EEL08, I was reading some of my old posts back from this time last year. We were both talking about how we weren't sure we would get in and what we would do if we had to reapply. All the secondaries and rejections we handled . . . it brought a tear to my eye! We've come so far (along with many others here on SDN) and I just wanted to say I couldn't have done it without you and my other SDN buddies. 😍

Holy crap! We're going to med school in a couple of months! 😱😀

:laugh: I just read it. It is crazy how freaked out I was and worried, rescheduling the MCAT and all that. I guess at the time it was hard to know if we stood much of a chance with our MCAT scores but clearly our amazing personalities shined through. 😉 It will be a crazy and interesting journey and I'm sure the insane amounts of time I spend on SDN will dwindle quite a bit but hopefully the Class of 2013 hopefulls will take over. 🙂

When I'm not using four letter words, a-comb-us. Their customer support is terrible!!!
 
Wow! I opened this not realizing it was my own thread from just about forever ago. I pronounce it uh-comb-us, roughly.
 
This thread is great, it answered like 1/3 of my DO questions.
 
It has already been said but LMU-DCOM pronounces it L - M - U - DCOM.

I actually don't think this is a stupid thread at all. I was talking to a freshman over the Summer who, for MCAT, said emm - cee - ay - tee instead of emm-cat. I found it incredibly odd but then again I learned my way of pronouncing the abbreviation from friends. If I didn't have any Pre-Med friends I may have done it differently. Actually a helpful thread if anything!
