I'm 30, BS in IDS with cognates in psych and religion gpa 3.0 from Liberty University Online
No real science courses to speak of - they are 10 years old.
I've been working on my bachelors off and on since 2011.
Life happened......
Would I do better to get another BS from an actual university that's worth something or do a DIY post bacc?
I need all my sciences.
In my AA I have lots of Ws and and a few Fs with retakes that were Cs
I'm no longer in the unsafe situation I was in back then but I'm afraid the damage has been done to get into MD school.
My husband is 5 years from retiring from the military - so my goal is to be applying for 2020.
I have medical experience but I've been out of the field and a sahm for the last 5 years.
I have no ECs to speak of unless they want to hear about my mommy play groups and breastfeeding peer counseling - haha
I'm considering phlebotomy for experience and working on shadowing.
I'm capable of the marathon....I'm just nervous I'm having delusions of grandeur.
Thanks for the advice!

Also I'm not hard up on MD - I'll definitely apply to DO as well.

How old are your bad grades? If they are over 10 years old or about to be, then you could consider moving to Texas, establish residency. Enroll and take all of your pre-requisites under the Texas Academic Fresh Start. It's not a quick route, but it is one thing to consider. Texas has cheap tuition, and a lot of medical schools with a required in-state bias if they are a public school.

I had some poor grades from over 10 years ago. I used the Academic Fresh Start and TMDSAS didn't add them into my verified GPA. They are still on my individual transcripts. I just have to explain what happened way back when.

You could also retake all of your bad grades with grade replace for DO schools, but I think you really have to pull high grades to prove that you are ready for medical school. Don't leave any doubts.

That would definitely be a possibility....seeing as Texas is likely the next duty station for my husband.
My poor grades are from my AA....so 2008-early 2010.
I won't be able to start any coursework until Fall 2017.

It won't consider the grades from over 10 years at the start of enrollment under Academic Fresh Start. So if you enrolled with AFS at 2019, then all grades from 2009 until present will be counted. Also, you can't count those older grades towards a bachelors. It's tricky to pull off and depends on the right timing,

You're essentially starting from scratch. While you do technically have a BS, the academic credibility of your Alma mater is not what you'd wish it to be -- which means you need to prove yourself academically. Start small and safe -- Bio 101 and maybe Psych 101 at your local community college and gun for high A's. If that works, move up to your state U for Bio 201, Chem 101, Physics, etc until you've got your pre-reqs knocked out. It takes as long as it takes.

And don't knock breastfeeding peer counseling. It's not as easy as it looks 😵

Yeah.....I'm feeling pretty defeated.

Okay, I must admit... I thought you meant you were trying to apply in the upcoming cycle. Hehe oops. Disregard my previous statement and remind me to :smack:

You actually have a decent amount of time to start some of the things you need to do within the next couple years. Though technically, if you want to start in 2020, you would need to start filling out the apps early-mid 2019 so that gives you roughly 2.5 years to get a good chunk of what @DokterMom said to do (great place to start to see if you can actually spend the net 7-10 years engrossed in science/medical curriculum).

Goodluck! And :welcome:

Just knocking out prerequisites or doing a diy post bacc - which are essentially the same thing at this point....i guess

The joys of motherhood....

That's makes me feel a little better. Even if it takes an extra year, I'll take it.
Mistakes of our youth.....explaining it to them is easier said than done.
Whoops!!!
I will definitely start small and gain momentum and much better grades. I feel like life experience will play a positive roll in this. I just hope I make the best decisions for courses and/or SMP
