I thought this was kinda funny..

I have been shadowing ("watching" behind his shoulder) my dentist for like 6 months now. But today, he finally let me kinda assist him when he was doing a root canal on a patient. and this happened..😀

so it was the first time i got to assist.. i was happy as hell. I handed him whatever he asked for in the beginning, then later he let me held the suction tube when he started drilling...........then 15 mins into the procedure, the patient started screaming and kicking about the pain!! thats when It became interesting😛😛..


..as we went along, the patient's suffering seem to gotten worst and hella dramatic ......I felt really bad seeing her in so much pain and literally felt like I was in some kind of military torture operation! Plus the fact she was a girl kinda made me felt worst....


So through all the madness of kicking and tears..my hands was literally shaking and on couple occasion I accidentally suctioned the patient's cheek.😎.. ..hahaha and knowin she was already in so much pain. i know it made her felt even more uncomfortable..and she gave me the "wtf this man is doing to me, i'mma kill you" look.... (i was bout to piss in my pants when she stair at me)😉


.. but just the image of the tube sucking on inside of her cheek and her reaction like this 🙂eek:wtf!) was really funny and scary at the same time.but i know i couldn't laugh.....and knowing that the patient knew that I wasn't a "pro" made me even more nervous.(b/c my dentist asked me questions about the status of application during the procedure)..

Afterward, my dentist was kind enough to tell me that it was normal to be nervous the first time esp. if someone is kicking and screaming in pain like she was...... so i felt a little bit better.. haha .. but just wanted to share my experience cause I really thought it was exciting/funny/scary..

Hahaha, awesome. The farthest I ever got was pushing the X-ray button and wiping down chairs. The dentist I shadowed actually never really caused anyone much pain. He is pretty generous with the novocaine.

Is it normal for people to shadow a dentist for so long during the application process? 6 months seems like such a long time. I shadowed for 1 week, got 40 hours, and was done. During that time I assisted in a root canal (nothing nearly as traumatic, lol), an extraction (where I saved the patient from choking on a broken off piece of their molar with my ninja-suction skillz), and a filling. I was nervous as hell though with that suction, and admit that I stuck it to their cheek a couple of times, but like ya said, first time you'll be nervous.

i guess I always feel welcomed to go back to see/learn new things.. plus is good to have a mentor to go to whose willing to guide you.. thats hard to find....

I shadowed an endo for 20 hours

root canals are soo dull...it would suck even more if the doctor didn't have digital x-ray

my first day of work in a dental office, we had this patient who suffered from anxiety problems. as soon as she was seated and the doctor barely started workin on her, she started having a MASSIVE panic attack. i have never seen anyone have a panic attack before, so this was a crazy experience for me on my first day of work! on top of that, the doctor asked me to just "sit next to her" and comfort her and give her whatever she wants!! needless to say, my reaction was WTF mayne!!
the doctor gave her ativan and it didn't do anything! then he talked to a pharmacist and gave her valium. then she decided she wanted to go for a little jog to calm herself and the doctor asks me to follow her without her noticing!! after her little valium/jog session, she calms down and the doctor does his thing. the whole thing was insane!!

The funniest/scariest experience I had while assisting was to see a patient swallow a dental bur...it wasn't my fault (or the dentist's) that the dental bur fell, but it was me who couldn't catch it with the suction tube (i didn't have any experience) 🙂...the patient didn't even notice the bur going down his throat, so i kept telling the doctor in English not to tell the patient (we were in a foreign clinic)....still, his ethics were better than that, and the patient was fine with it...thank god for third world countries where liability is not an issue...

I shadowed a pedodontist for a while and this one chubby little kid flipped out one time. he was kicking and screaming, saying "i'm gonna die!" and "i hate you!" The dentist had me hold him down on the chair. that was about as involved as i ever got in that office.
If it were up to me I woulda just sneaked up behind the kid with some ether on a cloth like the movies.

I was shadowing a pedodontist for quite some time and every now and then a child would throw up due to gag reflexes. One day a little girl just suddenly vomited while laying down in the chair. Huge chunks (i mean huge) started running over her face to her hair. A big puddle eneded up settling in her eye so she couldn't see. The dentist had to frantically suction her eye! It was the funniest/saddest/grossest thing I ever saw!

It wasn't the dentist's fault? Who's fault was it then? Whom ever was operating the handpiece should have made sure the bur was secure. So, I believe it was probably the dentist's fault.

The most painful procedure I've witnessed was also a root canal. The doctor informed the patient that she needed to be on antibiotics for a while before he wanted to perform the procedure, it had something to do with the pain meds ability to work I believe. The patient was leaving the country soon and insisted that it be taken care of. The doctor obliged her request. The entire procedure her fingers were digging into her palm while the rest of her body writhed in pain, tears running down both sides of her face. I've only ever seen such pain in people who had their knee tendons tore in football games or practice. After the procedure the doctor leaves the room and the patient starts talkin about her twin children. She then informs me that giving birth to her girls was far less painful than the root canal. Right then and there I thought about how dentists such as Horace Wells must have felt before anesthetics.

The most memorable moment was when i got to help assist in a FBI (full bony extraction). It took a couple hours. They had to cut through the gum with a scalpel, remove fat, drill through bone, since the wisdom tooth was immersed in it. There was alot of blood. I got in this zone where your adrenaline kicks in and your just hyper focused. Really enjoyable experience

I am very glad you found dentistry to be humorous. It will keep your stress levels down. Just make sure you don't have a smile on your face when you hear that sucking sound, when the suction get stuck to the patients cheek.
