Im plannning to apply to DO and MD

1) Is this okay? assuming some of them will upload onto interfolio by June1st and some will mail it by June 1st (in which case interfolio will have them by June 14th).

2) So assuming I have all recs in by June 14th in interfolio, will I be fine? will I risk getting my app delayed in any way cause I want to apply as early as possible.

3) How long does AMCAS take to process letters they get from interfolio and send it to schools

4) what is the timeline for sending letters to schools? like when should I send them? in June or after I get my primary app verified?

5) How about DO schools? I know I have to have interfolio send them the letters directly so when should I do this?

I told my letter writers to have it into interfolio by June 1st as well. It's my understanding that you don't submit LORs until secondaries are out, so really June 1st is being early. I just told them that in order to ensure that if/when someone procrastinates I have at least a month of buffer time to deal with it.

Schools don't even see your app until the end of June

should be fine. Interfolio is usually faster than the two weeks that they state. They were always onemor two days for US post, and within seconds for electronic upload.

That will be just fine.

It takes a couple of days for US mail, but probably right away for electronic.

they can be there anytime from May, all the way up to when your school receives the primary application upload that contains your application. The first day that AMCAS does this is late July. NOBODY has their application sent to a school until the first upload day.even those that are verified the first day don't have the application to the school until late June, on the first upload date.

5) How about DO schools? I know I have to have interfolio send them the letters directly so when should I do this?

after the school gets your primary, and they send a secondary out to you. Most ask for LORs at that time. There are a few that don't want LORs until they send you an interview invitation.
I know it is difficult, but just relax. That is one of the big lessons you learn when you apply. A month to get back MCAT scores, several weeks for primary applications, several weeks for secondary applications, several weeks or months for interview invitations, several weeks until the interview, several weeks for the decision. Then sit on a wait list for months until you finally know where you fit with each school sometime in MAY!!! You are going to need to figure out how to spend all this time waiting in a productive way.

Isn't this your second thread about LORs in the past couple of days?

So just bumping this thread since reading the two replies I feel like I may not be as clear on this issue as I thought I was:

When exactly do you submit LORs to schools? Is it with the primary, or with the secondary? I was under the impression it was with the secondary which means that at the soonest you would have to have LORs ready to submit in mid or late July (or whenever the first wave of secondaries goes out).

For MD schools: LORs get submitted to AMCAS in May or June. When THEY send your primary to the schools, your LORs go along. You check a few boxes on your AMCAS to choose which letters go to each school. That allows for a more unique blend of letters to be sent off. For example, a writer could write two letters for you. One for one school that, say, could be his/her alma matter, and a second one that is for every other school.

For DO schools: LORs get sent separately to each school. Since each school has a different idea about how/when letters should be submitted, you should check with each school. Either read their web site or call and talk to someone. Most want you to send letters about the same time as your secondary, but they can handle letters before, they will just make a file for your stuff, and put it in. Some schools only want letters later, after they extend an interview invitation. I know that when I interviewed at a couple of schools there were people notified on interview day that they didn't have the required letters, yet, and they needed to get them in before a decision was made on their application.

I really hope that the question was genuine. OCDOCDOCD, you don't seem to be the trolling type. 🙂 but if you really have OCD OCD OCD, then you may need me to answer it one more time.

Was the question really so stupid you thought it was trolling? 😕

I seriously thought the letters went along with the secondary. Don't know where I got that idea from, but it seemed to make sense since schools always talk about applications not being complete until they get your LORs, but then they say the same thing about MCAT scores so I guess it's possible to send in primaries without everything needed, they just don't get reviewed by schools until they're complete.

Not stupid, but I thought that someone with over 1000 posts, and someone that claims to have OCD OCD OCD would have read enough about the process to already know. I know that my small amount of neuroticism has made me search and read everything that I can come across related to the application process. I was so afraid that I would mess up and forget a step, so I made sure about everything, and checked out what the next step of the process would be from at least two or three different sources.

Letters do go along with the secondary at most DO schools, but with the primary for MD schools. With the two different systems, I can understand why someone would get confused.

I did not intend to offend. 🙂

Pretty much the bottom line when sending LORs. This is easily searchable on SDN.

LORs are submitted with secondaries. You should be good.

I know your question is a few days old, but I don't think you have received a complete answer yet.

Most people don't consider LORs to be part of the primary application because they won't slow down your application until you are trying to submit your secondary application and be marked complete.

For MD schools, AMCAS operates the LOR service as part of the AMCAS application, which is equated to the primary application by most people. However, for most schools, you are not required to send the LORs until you are completing your secondary application.

If you already have all of your letters in and you already know which ones you want to send to which schools, then you can go ahead and send the letters when you submit your primary. However, you are not required to complete that section when you submit your primary application and you can't go back and take away a letter from being sent to a school once you submit it so you need to be 100% sure that you really want to send the letter.

Keep in mind that at the vast majority of med schools, secondary applications are sent out to everyone who sends in a primary application, and for pretty much all schools, they are not expecting to see LORs at this point. Once you submit your secondary, then yes, they will look for them to see if they can mark your application as fully completed and send it off for interview consideration.

There are always a few schools with different expectations so you'll need to keep your eyes out for that, but this is how it works at most schools. You can get your LORs in by the July/August timeframe and still be considered pretty early or at least on time in the process.
