Hi
I'm a foreign dentist. I took my exam ( part I) last June 9th in Pittsburgh, PA. I was the only one taking the board in that centre. There were lockers you could use. They gave me "plastic sheet" and markers. During the tutorial I wrote down primary and permanent calcifications and eruptions, some graphics ( CLASS I for example), nomencalture.

Some questions were really easy, I knew the answer before reading the options. With other questions I needed to think, but I was sure about the answer, but some others were really tricky and answer choices were really similar. At the end of the first part ( 200 questions) were the TESTLETS...for me the worst part. The patient's histories were really long, with lot of details, and every time that I was going to answer a question I had to read again the patient's history. It took me a lot of time.
The break is one hour. You can take the whole hour or less. I took one hour. I needed to go outside.
In the second part, TESTLETS were first.
I finished on time.

I have a LOT of questions about NERVES, collagen, VIRUS, insulin-glucagon, circulatory system, respiratory system ( equations), DNA, TMJ,immunity, allergy, recesive and dominant diseases.

A lot of questions with "EXCEPT" and "THE STATEMENT IS TRUE/FALSE, THE REASON IS TRUE/FALSE AND THEY ARE/AREN'T RELATED"

Study Dental Anatomy in detail!!!........lot of questions about differences between teeth and "excepts": very fine differences............I underestimated DA.
I did'nt have diagrams.

The material that I used was:
Kaplan (once) It was the first resourse that I used. It took me a lot of time because I was learning English and specific terminology at the same time. I'd have liked to have more time to read it again. I went through DENTAL DECKS ( 2006-07) twice, and read (like a newspaper) one more time Biochemistry/ Physiology and Microbilogy/ Pathology.
I think that old papers are REALLY IMPORTANT!!! Unfortunatelly I didn't have time to see ALL I have. I was averaging 80% of correct answers in old papers.
I purchased CRACK THE NBDE: questions are tough, but some answers aren't correct. It was very useful as a mock exam: I practiced 7-HOUR exams.
I found WIKIPEDIA a GREAT RESOURCE!!

One week after my exam ( SATURDAY, JUNE 16TH) I got the results: 85

Your # correct National Mean
ANATOMIC SCIENCE 72 66.2
BIOCHEM/ PHYSIOLOGY 74 64.2
MICROBIOLOGY/PATHOLOGY 71 64.9
DENTAL ANATOMY/OCCLUSION 77 74.6

I was a little disappointed at the beginning. This exam involved a lot of effort and sacrifice. Not only mine, but from my son and my husband.
Now I'm thinking about taking PART II and trying to get experience here in the United States either as a Dental Assitant or volunteer.

I hope this help! Good luck everybody!!!:luck:

Dear PUPA on behalf of all people who read your post
THANK YOU FOR THE DETAILED EXPLAINATION
i wish you all success and go for part two you will be in a good shape

hey good score and all the best for your part-2 preparation. Thanks for the information and I agree with u that the exam needs lot of effort and sacrifices made by us and also by the people around us especially children.I really wonder how to score above 90.whether the method we use to study is wrong or what because when we take the exam we feel it was quite easy except like 10-15 Q which u r not sure of but the result is entirely different. As i scored low when i took exam in april I am studying to retake. All the best for ur future.please share any tips u find it might help us.Thank you.

Hi ,
I was really touched after reading your post because i am also sailing in the same boat as i have to take care of my son also and hardly get time to study...i am struggling to get myself atleast 2 hrs of study everyday and that too seems impossible sometimes...sometimes i think it will take me ages to take the exam with the kind of time i have....so how much time did you devote to studying for the boards?\

hi
even i need some info abt that, lincense without schooling, plz inform me abt it when u come across.ok.thank u.

Hi guys,
As far as I know, there is no way you can practise bypassing the nbde exams and 2/3 year study. ADA might accredit some schools in future, so, students from those accredited foreign schools can practise without going through the normal procedures. right now there is just one school accredited by California state that is in mexico and another school from India called Manipal has applied for accredition.. which may take some time. So students from that school in mexico can practise right away after getting their license. So this is for california, there are 2 other states, minnesota, i guess, not very sure and florida(just starting) where you an bypass the schooling but there too rules are stringent and vary on student to student basis. You should contact the respective schools for the requirements. Hope this helps.

I'm a student in FL. I don't think any international dentist can bypass schooling in FL (not 100% sure). Both UF & Nova offer Foreign Trained Dental Program, UF has an option to do either 2 or 4 yrs, and Nova needs at least 3 yrs. We just met with 12 international dentists who will join our DMD class this year. All of them had been dental hygienists in US for over 3 yrs, w/ both Part I & II over 90. Most of them had applied multiple times to get in---extremely competitive. But I've heard people say that in NY, foreign dentists can choose not go to dental school, but just receive very limited training, and be able to practice. However, those dentists can only practice in certain underprivileged areas. I don't know the details about this.

Thanks alot for the detail info. Best wishes to your Part II & future career PUPA
