Saw a special on the Science Channel of this guy creating the first synthetic organism. He was also the first to map the entire human genome

I think it would be pretty sick to get to do research for a company like this. He does research for a pharmaceutical company as well, I wonder if he has any PharmDs on the pay roll

His research team consists of some of the most prestigious scientists from around the world, and I'd be surprised if there was a single pharmd on payroll to be honest.

Craig Venture has a PhD in Pharmacology himself, so who knows

I would guess that most of the scientists there have biochemistry or genetics related degrees

he didn't create a synthetic organism... he reprogrammed an organism with a synthetic chromosome (still impressive).

I'm glad there are people passionate about research enough to do things like this. For some reason I have zero interest in any kind of research. Seems so boring to me. I wanna be a community pharmacist.

So, in your thoughts, the two fields are mutually exclusive?

Perhaps not mutually exclusive, but how many primary research papers involve PharmD's vs Phd's in Pharmacology?

PharmD is not nearly as much a degree for research compared to many of the other degrees that work with Craig. I'm not saying there's never been a PharmD involved in research, but we are talking the elite of the elite...and I just don't see a place for a PharmD in a lab like that.

Just simply my opinion 🙂

I agree with you in the confines of basic science research; that is definitely a domain driven by the PhDs of the world (for the most part, there are obviously exceptions).

Your original statement made me think that you were implying PharmDs had no place in any research, which is not true. The PharmD is not a degree immediately conducive to basic science research without a lot of extra effort, but it is perfectly tailored to clinical research. In terms of research-specific training, a PharmD has very a very similar background to an MD-only researcher.
