Taking MCAT in July/August.
cGPA: 3.53
sGPA: 3.44

Biolog major/Math minor, shadowed M.D. and D.O. (50+ hours), volunteer in E.R. hospital, work full-time with parents, great leadership skills, choir, piano tutor, etc..

I'm Asian/female/21 years old. I did not finish physics 2 w/ lab yet but will take in fall. And I'm going to finish orgo 2 w/ lab in the summer. I get my bachelors in spring 2010.

Should I apply this year? Can anyone tell me my chances?

I think you have a good chance at medical school. Can I ask why you want to go to Howard?

I think you'd have a shot if you have demonstrated commitment to working with underserved populations. This means your ECs should show significant clinical experience and/or community service along those lines. it's even better if your leadership activity supports such an interest.

It will kinda depend on your MCAT with still 2 prereqs missing. I say if you do well on that, sure, it's worth applying---bear in mind though that you probably wont get your Ochem grade until the end of the summer, and your mcat score even later, thus putting you somewhat late in the cycle. It's not to say that you can't send your stuff in before that, but I wouldn't expect to hear much until you are complete with everything since a few major pieces of the puzzle are missing at this point, and that might affect your chances since your current GPA is only average.

Thanks for the reply! =) I want to go to Howard because the doctor I shadowed went there for medical school and told me the great features of that school.

You do know that the school is like 95% URM right? Nothing wrong with that, but a lot of non-URM seem to feel a little out of place and I also heard it's much harder to get into Howard if you're not URM.

URM = Underrepresented Minority, correct?

On the AAMC, it says an individual is considered a URM if the following is met:

(a) You are a citizen of the U.S. , etc...
(b) Your are African American, Hispanic, etc. etc. (does not include Asian) OR if you are economically disadvantaged.

Economically disadvantaged = me

Am I a URM?

u are not. being vietnamese does not make you URM.

URM is basically african american, hispanic, native americans and some SouthEast Asians like Laos or Flip or Cambodian.

vietnamese folks are over-represented in the medical field...but i think you should still apply to it..i think the previous poster's comment about 95% of the students at howard is URM is too high...i read about 10 vietnamese folks were in the class last year

My 95% number is just a random guess, but I heard it sure feels that way. A majority is either black or hispanic and since I believe Howard is the first African American medical school, they have a tendency to keep that culture.

Is Cambodians considered URM? What other Southeast asians are considered URM? I know a friend who is half cambodian so I was wondering if that's URM. And also, doesn't the URM from southeast asian help a lot less as to black or hispanic URM?
