I want to be the best applicant possible(MD, prestigious?), what can I do?

I came into college with a great work ethic, one which I still maintain. Although it may seem odd, I was extremely unfit(almost overweight and had trouble breathing, especially during winter).

I was scoring at the top of math and chemistry, but I bombed some art classes(it's supposed to be part of an introductory engineering curriculum, i don't know why they would make 80% of it be drawing and the other 20% be group work and labs) both first and second quarters. Almost everyone in the class got an A except me, I got a lot lower. Chemistry was the other way around.

Winter quarter was rough for me since I ended up losing a lot of my friends and puberty hit me(i.e. my personal life). This spring I started getting back to my feet and right now my cumulative GPA(first year) is probably going to end up around 3.2xx.

My major is chemical engineering, and I know that I will do well in all my courses.

-Last summer I volunteered at the hospital for 40-50 hours. I also got to shadow a doctor for 3 patients (it was ~15-20 minutes each patient, but I actually learned a lot from each one before they were let go).

- This summer I will be working in a clinic/shadowing a doctor (predict 500-700+ hours).

-This fall(? maybe winter or sping) quarter I will probably be working as a peer mentor for chemistry

-I have had research experience through one of my chemistry classes (we analyzed soil samples collected from various sites). We did this "research" instead of doing normal labs for the 2nd half of the quarter.

-My winter quarter looks like garbage (it's that bad), but the others are fine. My grades start out high(~4), take a huge dive(~2), and climb back up(~3). I would rather not post my grades.

What should I do now?

If I earn the highest grades possible, will medical schools see beyond my first year? I haven't taken all my prereqs yet (still need to take 2 more bio courses, O chem, physics).

-Does being in an engineering major help in anyway(I haven't taken any actual major courses yet).

I am really sorry if I came out to be a whiner(and for length of this, I know I threw in a lot of personal problems but my performance wasn't really reflected through my grades at the time).

Yes

Not so much to bank on it, especially if your GPA is on the extreme low side of the matriculant curve.

You got awhile to bring your GPA up. Just focus on getting as many A's as possible before applying.
