Hello. I am nearing the start of my senior year, and I've been thinking of what path I want to follow in life. I am currently weighing the idea of becoming a Clinical Psychologist as a career choice. I understand the years of school involved, but I feel like it's well worth it in the end, albeit I'm not a good high school student, but I feel like that isn't an important factor in my future. (My GPA is a 3.0...it's decent. I've taken a fair share of honors classes, but no AP.)

What I want to know, and probably need to know, is how do I succeed? I am interested in understanding the human mind, and helping people deal with their own personal issues. My ultimate goal would be to establish my own practice and essentially become my own boss, so how can I be successful in doing so?

I'll start you off with some advice that will help you establish yourself and get you into graduate school.

To be successful you need to:

1) get excellent grades in college ( >3.5 GPA)
2) get involved in research early on
3) conduct an undergraduate honors thesis or the equivalent
4) seek out opportunities to present and or publish research
5) actively research your personal interests and try to gain experience with the things you think you will want to study in graduate school. this applies to both research area of interest and clinical work (e.g. which populations do you want to work with, what kind of treatments)
7) try to win some awards, it makes you look good 🙂
6) be focused on the things above, but also be flexible and try to understand the many different philosophies in psychology.

It's a really competitive field so you're going to need to become a good student. You'll have to decide if it's all worth it.
:luck:
