I want to write something that can be published in a science journal. How do I go about this?

I enjoy writing and I think I'm good at it. I would love to crank out some research but I am at a new school and there aren't any opportunities for research on campus. What I do have is access to the internet and a willingness/ability to write. Ideally I would like to research a topic I'm interested in and write something meaningful about it, and then have it published in a journal. The goal is to add something to my CV for residency applications and also to satisfy my genuine curiosity in medical topics.

I'm not looking to do a meta-analysis or anything, but maybe a scoping review... promising places for future research, stuff like that.

Is this doable? What sort of article could I write? Are there examples that I could read? What sort of journals would accept an article from a first-year DO student?

Most importantly, would this count as "published research"?

Thank you all!

I did a review article several years before medial school and it probably describes what you are looking for.

The article I did look at up to date research on a certain amino acid compound. This maybe the route you want to take, looking at the latest research on a certain subject.

First step, find out what you want to do. Look to the research on the topic and see if there is anything recent (by recent I mean within the last 5-10 years). If there isn't, then go for it.

Second step, look for a mentor. You cannot do this on your own and a journal may not publish your paper because you are not working with a PhD or MD/DO. You need someone with experience who can walk you through it. Make sure this person also has publishing experience. Make sure to do a pubmed check on the faculty member you want to work with. If they didn't have at least 2-3 publications, don't work with them!

Third step, when you meet your mentor lay out your goals for this paper. Let them know you want from it and what the roles are for any members you want to add (don't get screwed over and not get first authorship for a project you are the founder of).

Fourth step, get to it. Look at all most up to date research and make summaries of them. Then compile those summaries into your paper.

The fantastic thing about review articles is that there is no grants or IRB approval needed. You just do the research. Main thing is to make sure you have the time to do it. Good luck
