You all know how the entering GPA has shot up frpm 2.s'thing to 3 & up. I am from TX and there seem to be trend here. It looks like there are a lot of students on probation; kick outs and drop outs. Usually they start w/ a class of 120-125 but graduate less than 100. Why is that?

Because most students who get in pharmacy school think they can relax and find themselves relaxing too much. I know once you're.... YOU'RE IN...and you know what they call the guy that graduates lasts in his class from med school..........Doctor!! lol so the same rule applies for pharmacist. I just dont think they apply themselves like they did to get in pharmacy school b/c like i said once you're in...you're in.

Some people just aren't meant to be pharmacists. I can tell you there are a few in my class that I don't think will graduate. Also, some people enter with an AA from a CC and think they can hack it. Some most definately can and do and work their butts off, but some people just can't. It's really hard to start this kind a program without really being challenged before. I can say from experience, some people drop out for personal reasons and some just don't have what it takes. I also think each program is different, I've heard of some programs that will pretty much force-feed the info so that everyone passes and some are very strict. I think there are a lot of factors.

I also believe that some students have a misconception of what pharmacy school is like. When I was in undergrad students would say all the time how easy pharmacy is going to be, but they really had no idea what pharmacy was like. This is esp true for those with no pharmacy experience. I do believe that pharmacy is going to get more difficult as time goes on and we expand as a profession into a more clinical role. I just hope future students are prepared.

Are you a student of TSU. I heard alot of their first year students are on probation. that is pretty sad

i always say that getting in is the easy part and that staying in is pretty damn hard. pharmacy school is no walk in the park. i heard last semester that 18 students failed my pharmacodynamics class i don't know how accurate that number is, but i can verify that it is over 10. and the year before that, 20 people failed physiology. so once you're "in", you can easily find yourself out.

I had a professor tell me in one of my pharmacy school interviews that he found there would be a certain (small) group of students every year who were really there because their parents wanted them to, because they didn't get into a different type of school (like one pharmacist I know who really wanted to be a vet), etc. as opposed to really having a passion for pharmacy. Those students, he said, tended to have problems because they didn't have as much internal motivation to learn the material.
