I just called admissions and set up appointments with the admission advisors/tour @ USC and ASU. Does it help any visiting the schools before applying? I have time on my hands for a couple of weeks and tickets are pretty cheap right now. What do you guys think? Can it slightly help my chances of getting accepted?

Chances are, with the large number of applicants that apply, they won't remember your name. However... it can help after you get an interview. Last year while visiting family in Boston, I dropped by Tufts and took a tour. This year when I was interviewed I was able to tell them why I wanted to go to Tufts, and I referred to visiting the year before. I think that let them know that I was serious about going to school there.

If for no other reason... it can't hurt and it may be fun. Go for it.

It will help you decide if you like the school, by looking at the facility, checking out the program first hand and talking to the students. And like Utes said, you can mention your visit in the secondary or during the interview and you will stand out as a candidate serious about that school.

Good luck. Enjoy SoCal!

Which ASU are you talking about? Arizona State University doesn't have a dental school, but there is a private dental school in Mesa, Arizona.

I think it would give you more information about what they are looking for, which could help you tailor your application. At the same time, I don't think that when the admissions committee sits down they will know or care that you came for a tour.

Visit the school and while you are doing that, visit with admissions to make sure you have everything in order to apply, get a business card. Chances are someone from admissions is going to be on the board and will remember you, especially if you stand out (have good personable conversation). Follow up with a thank you for the visit, that is the icing on the cake

I agree with Rajan. One note I might make is that when you have this personable conversation, try to spark a conversation about something other than the dental school and probably even the area. Those topics are going to be the ones that every dental student and their mother has asked them. Try picking a topic that both interests them and that will stand out in their memory. Rajan was also correct in reference to someone from admissions being on the board. The can be your greatest asset. Most will tell you, once you get an interview, your scores and application matter no longer. The impression you give at your interview is the most important, a visit can only help.

It can't hurt. And, like others said, you might find out things that will make you want to apply or not apply there.
