If I called a hospital to do an elective rotation there, and the medical eduaction coordinator told me:

"I will need to speak to xxx first, and I will call you tommorrow morning."

If he/she did not call me back that morning:

-Does this mean I am rejected?

-Is it polite to call back and inquire? (or is it rude, since the reason they did not call me is because they are not interested in me?)

Any advice please?

Thank You.

People are busy give them some time and RELAX!!!!!!!!!

If you don't hear anything by the end of the week call them on Monday.

yes, it means you are rejected and you should FREAK OUT now!!
um, no just kidding. Really, it's nothing to worry about. Don't spaz out and call them or they'll think you are a spaz. You know? Wait a few days, it's not all about you, ya know? Call them if you don't hear back after 1 week.

No, it means xxx is at a conference out of town and the med ed coordinator sent the request by email, then left on her vacation before she saw that the email bounced back. Now xxx is back, but his secretary's kid is sick so she didn't let the asst med ed coord know that xxx has to check the call schedule with the chief resident (who is off at a fellowship interview today and tomorrow) to see if they can accommodate a rotating student. And anyway, the asst med ed coord is swamped with a grant review handed down from the department chair (b/c she normally is his direct report) so there's no way that she has time to track you down at one of your phone numbers to tell you all this...

...but that would be an oversimplification of what's REALLY going on around here!

Oh, well...I called today and got what I expected...A big fat rejection.

For some reason, people just do not tell me "NO" directly. They always give me the usual line, "well, I have to check with so and so, and I will call you back today or tomorrow." Even the "all powerful" PDs give me this line when they do not want me around! I realy do not know why? Probably because I am very shy and polite and they feel bad saying "NO" straight to me in my face. Well, I would rather have a direct NO over false hopes.

Thanks for the advice everyone. 🙂
