DOs can totally become surgeons! It would really be your fastest route to becoming a physician.

A 2 year upward trend is great but if you're willing to keep working at it and finances aren't an issue, I would continue to do what you're doing till both your cGPA and sGPAs are above a 3.0 so you're not screened out by any schools.

MD is practically out of question; if you had 5-6 MORE years of 18-15 undergrad credits at straight 4.0 you'd have 3.2 over 12-13 years undergrad..

grade replacement and do well on MCAT and DO should be feasible

It would take a long time to get your gpa into range for most formal post-bacs.

The DO schools (except TCOM) will allow you to replace sad grades with a better grade even if the class is re-taken at another institution. This could be accomplished at your own pace without acceptance into a post bac.

General Surgery is an accessible surgical specialty for DO applicants (second only to Ob-Gyn).

I think MD is probably not going to happen. You need to do hardcore grade replacement, and get lots and lots of A's, for a chance at DO.

Right on. Thanks for the help guys, I'm going to go ahead with the grade replacement DO route. If I wanted to be MD, I shouldn't have screwed up so much and I'm lucky DO is still within reach

Good for you. The goal is to become a physician and take care of people.

I often have a DO oncologist on back-up, ready to come get my MD butt out of trouble in the OR. That could be you someday!!

": and I know it is very difficult to get into surgical residencies."
This is dependant upon how well you do on your USMLE.
It has nothing to do with DO/MD.

This is what you are looking at. And what you are saying about DO and not wanting to go that route are not valid reservations. Is it harder to get into a surgical residency as a DO? Perhaps, but you can't have a 2.4 GPA and complain about that which you seem to be realizing. There are people with lower GPAs who have ended up in DO's with bigger comeback stories. Retake the low grades, do another year of classes to prove your upward trend is legit, and most importantly do well on the MCAT and you can begin to start thinking about DO schools then, but the road ahead is still long.

He is right, I would take the best deal you can get. Unless your considering going abroad. You can still become a surgeon through DO schools. More surgeons come from MD schools, considering they have more matriculating students. In addition, I don't think all of the people at DO schools are academically the top of their class. But, they will make great physicians nonetheless.
