Hello everyone! I am new to the forum. I would like some feedback regarding my DAT score, gpa, and schools:

DAT score:
PAT 19 91.2%
QAT 19 85.5%
RC 20 77.4%
Bio 19 91.2%
GChem 19 82.6%
OChem 21 93.9%
TS 20 93.1%
AA 20 92.6%

Undergrad cum. GPA: 3.0
Science GPA: 3.2
Graduate GPA: 3.9

Schools applying to: Boston U, Case, Columbia, Harvard, NYU, Temple, U of Michigan, Tufts, U of Louisville, U of Maryland, UNC, U of Penn, VCU

Let me know what you guys think. What schools I have the best chance of getting in? What schools I should take off from the list? etc....

It looks like you have pretty solid scores. Personally I would recommend spending some time dinking around on predents.com to see what would be a good fit with your particular stats. Right off the bat though I would say that going to Harvard may be a bit of a stretch. Take that for what its worth though.

Did you take any Topscore or DAT achiever practice exams? What were your scores?

I use Topscore and Kaplan:

Topscore:
Test 1 Test 2 Test 3
AA 16.8 19
TS 16.3 18
Bio 17 15 21
Chem 17 18 18
OChem 15 17 16
QRT 18 16 20
Read 17 18
PAT 20 20

Real DAT (6/19/06)
AA 20; TS 20; Bio 19; GChem 19; OChem 21; Reading 20; QAT 19

*Test #2 was incomplete, I did not finish every section. I did not use DAT Achiever; I wish I had known about it.

I read somewhere on this forum, that someone had their acceptance voided due to pre-req courses taken more than 5 years ago. Is there any truth to this statement? I have 2 courses (General Chem I and Inorganic Chem I with lab) taken more than 5 years ago. Should I retake them?

I would also like to boost my science gpa up. I'm applying for the Fall of 2007, if I take additional science courses this fall, would my science gpa change in December on the application? The Dean of Admission at UNC stated my science gpa (roughly 3.2) "would not help." What does that mean? Does it mean, it would hurt my chances?

Any clue to the following questions would be a huge help. Thank you in advance!

I think too that for most people who aren't the crazy overachievers on SDN here that going to their state school is a great way to have people overlook some of their blemishes on their application. So, in a way it kinda depends on the state too where you are a resident. Or at least in a state that participates in the WICHE program. Where are you a resident currently? Best of luck to you.

harvard 👎

I agree that Harvard, U of Penn, and Columbia is a stretch. My friend (who is starting Harvard dental in the fall) is paying for my application fees to those schools. Those are pipe dream schools, but who knows what could happen.

I say that you might have a shot at Columbia and UPenn, but honestly Harvard would be a waste of money. They like unique applicants along with good GPAs and DATs. Your DAT and GPAs are slightly lower than last years average entering class (except for PAT), but this year the competition is even tougher. If you have community service, a few years of research, publications, then those would really help you out. Though, if it won't kill you financially to apply, then it's up to you. Sometimes it's better to just try and fail, then not try and wonder what if?

Who knows, just apply to Harvard anyway. I think anyone who applies there considers that place their dream school regardless of grades and DAT scores. I just like how their site says people with 4.0 have been declined admission. So there's hope for us all!
