ICOM vs Noorda-COM

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
They are both very new, but at least ICOM has had 3 years to work out kinks in the curriculum and their board pass rate looks pretty good. I would go to a somewhat established school over Noorda, I think they are just trying to do too many new things with their curriculum and their first class will be a blood bath

Thank you for your input!

Any other thoughts from folks, especially those who think Noorda is a better choice?

Avoid Noorda like the plague. It’s going to be a hellish ride for them. Utah is overcrowded with medical schools as is. Noorda is going to have a slim chance of surviving (UVU ran into this problem with their PA program and look what happened..).

Is three medical schools in one state considered overcrowded? Why do you think Noorda will have similar fate to UVU?

In Utah Yes. UofU Owns most of the hospitals in SLC and north. Intermountain owns the rest, neither wants to deal with other schools. I have family that works at one of the hospitals that Noorda has for rotations and he found out from the news that students were going to be rotating with him. However, they are a private practice and not owned by the hospital so they are refusing to have students rotate with them. So that is one site that will have no OBGYN.

How would Noorda be able to partner with 15 hospitals in the area if no one thinks they'll survive? Clinical Partners | Noorda College of Osteopathic Medicine
I guess I'm trying to be optimistic about Noorda considering all that they have shared with students in their Faculty Friday videos, but I do understand their hopes may not come to fruition. Thanks for the discussion.

Money... And I guess I stand corrected that it's most intermountain hospitals. I would be surprised if Noorda was not paying a boatload to Intermountain health. I like Provo area and there is a lot of growth, but years ago BYU wanted to start a medical school and UofU said they would give them no support. A lot has changed since then but having your closest MD school hostile is not a good way to start off.

I mean RVU-SU was starting to get crushed by the university of Utah (which rotated at intermountain affiliates) so RVU sold RVU-SU to SGU to get that mess off their hands. 2 medical schools in a state that has 80% of its population in one condensed area is plenty enough. I don’t see Noorda being able to overcome the immense pressure they are about to get from UofU.

a family member of mine who works for steward health (a lot of hospitals affiliated with Noorda are steward run) said they took over a bunch of rinky dinky hospital that were months from closing. So don’t expect your clinical education to be strong AT ALL (keep in mind step 2-CK is now your ticket to a good residency spot). For the love of Mormon god go anywhere but Noorda, it’s closure is a matter of when not if.

Frankly, neither are great choices. Noorda should be off the table and ICOM has its own challenges. However, you will love living in Boise.

I vote ICOM because I'm waitlisted for NOORDA. 😆

I have a few friends at ICOM who have really been impressed with their experience and I currently live in Idaho. Couldn't recommend living here more. Good luck to you, my friend!
