So starting to put together my TY/Prelim ROL and was wondering how the ICU requirement for intern year works. From what I understand, the ACGME requires anesthesia to do at minimum 1 month of ICU with a max of 2 months that will count towards the 4 month residency requirement. However, do certain anesthesiology programs require 2 months during intern year? Seems like some TY/Prelim programs will automatically build in/replace 1 of the elective blocks with an additional ICU because of a "requirement."

Yes some programs have you do 2 of the 4 in intern year, so you might be safer if you have 2 vs 1.

yeah, my program has us do 2 months intern year and 2 months as CA-2s.

with the option of doing 2-3 more months our CA-3 years if we wish. i'd like to get a month in in the PICU.. a month with CVICU, and a month back in SICU.

It looks like one one month is fine per ACGME:

Int.B.2.a).(4) At least six months of the Clinical Base Year rotations must
include experience in caring for inpatients in internal medicine,
pediatrics, surgery, or any of the surgical specialties, obstetrics
and gynecology, neurology, family medicine, or any combination
of these. In addition, there should be rotations in critical care and
emergency medicine, with at least one month, but no more than
two months, devoted to each.
Up to one month may be taken in
anesthesiology. Rotations should ensure continuity of teaching
and clinical experience. Each month of training may be counted
only once. For example, a rotation in a pediatric intensive care unit
may count as either a month in pediatrics or a month in critical
care medicine.

Right, but the OP may match into an advanced program that only does 2 months in CA1-3 so he would need to cover the other 2 in intern year.

I'm assuming most TYs just adjust my schedule according to the requirements? Most TYs seem to have 1 ICU month in their basic curriculum and will hopefully just add on another if necessary for my anesthesia program. I would rather they not automatically give me 2 ICU months because I would rather do ICU as a CA in a SICU vs MICU as TY.
