Hello my SDN peeps, have not posted for a while because of residency. I am now applying for an ID fellowship and am on a H1b visa. Learned 3 days ago that a case report i was first author on was accepted for publication in a prestigous ID journal. I am hoping that this will help my chances of getting a spot. My question is how likely is it that I will even get an interview being on a H1b. Do you recommend changing to a J1 status for fellowship?

It depends on where u want to do ur ID fellowship...there are quite a few programs (some top ones included) who provide H visa. but definitely J visa would give more options in the form of more program choices. But in all my 3 years am yet to come across a FMG who has actually gone ahead and changed from a H to J for fellowship and to the best of my knowledge most of the program wouldn't even know where to begin with the paperwork for this is my guess....

Thanks Halifax, I think you have officially met a FMG who is willing to change visit status for a good fellowship. I don't think the receiving program has much paper work to do either if someone is switching to a J1 since it is done by ECFMG...just a thought.

that's not exactly what I meant - I've come across lots of FMG's who were more than willing to change to J for a fellowship spot and they said so in their eras application but unfortunately none of them matched to a J sponsoring program...and let me reiterate if you are hell bent on a few programs for ur fellowship which sponsor J visa you can apply to them saying as above and see what happens...good luck!
