I'd rather get a D than a C

At my college, it seems it's better to get a D than a C, because C grades cannot be retaken. Because DO allows retakes, wouldn't it by definition be better/logical to get a D and retake to get at an A or B than to get a C (that cannot be retaken) to have a better GPA? Heck, even an F may be better than a C

I think an A would be better than a D or a C.

However...just because the policy at your school is that you can't retake a C, it doesn't mean this is true for all schools. I am re-taking a course somewhere other than my undergrad college. So I would imagine that it would be better to retake a C to an A, rather than retake a D to an A. Do the best you can do and if you get a C, re-take the course somewhere else.

No, the grade will still be reported and schools can take note of it. I was asked about an F on my transcript during an interview (But had a good reason for it).

I'd suggest taking a W if at all possible. Honestly, I would take the C and try to do better from here on out. Retaking a class sucked for me.

Can you switch it to pass/fail? Then retake later?

Both will be seen negatively. While getting a D and retaking it would not hurt your GPA, the D will still show up on your transcript. I think I'd rather have them see a C on my transcript than a D. Failing a class is not a good look

OP, there's also the possibility of retaking those C's at another school and this still getting the grade replacement.

That said, I had a couple of D's in prereqs that I retook (and one in a non-prereq that I didn't retake) and I got in. So neither one is a death sentence to your application.

My school you have to get a F to be allowed to retake it. I have a couple of Cs that I have had contemplate retaking which are non - science (lower level calcs, I ended up doing fine in very advanced calculus, bizarre I know).
