I just thought I would post this idea to see what everyone thought of it. When I was applying I really lucked out that someone at my grad program saw my research interests, realized that it fit with the program that they were in, and contacted me telling me about the program. If it hadn't have been for them I may not have found this program, and I love it here! Because of that, once this board gets hopping (perhaps Novemberish, maybe earlier) I was thinking we could possibly start a thread where the current grad students could say what program they are in and their lab (if they wish). Then, the applicants can look through that thread and if someone is at a school they are interested in or is studying something they are interested in they can hopefully get in touch and learn more.

So what do you think? I am sorry to start a thread just for my idea for another thread but I thought I should get the opinions of the community and make sure it is permissible before doing it. I just think it would be beneficial both to the applicants and to the labs. I know that our lab has had a hard time being found by applicants since we aren't yet listed in the Insider's Guide or anything like that, so we at least would really appreciate the exposure!

Excellent idea!

Or, for the sake of anonymity, we could just list our lab's research and general geographic area (Canada, Midwest USA, North East USA, etc) and then those who are interested can PM us to ask for the specific schools.

I think it's a great idea! I start a similar thread (http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=434104) that never really took off. In fact I think it ended with someone talking about a pet rat...

Good, I am glad I am not the only one. Once we get more applicants on here I will try to remember to start up the thread, but if I get busy and forget (which definitely can happen) feel free to start it up! I can't wait to meet all the new applicants!

A thread like this would be so helpful for prospects like myself. I am constantly searching for faculty online but sites don't provide an insider perspective. Is there any way to launch this earlier? November is getting too close to deadlines and I would like some time to email and perhaps call faculty to talk about research interests...

I have no qualms about starting it earlier, perhaps even now since September is when I contacted faculty who I was interested in. I just want to do it at a time where it will be helpful and won't get burried!

I'd love for you to start posting now too. great idea.

Sounds good to me, though I will probably post more general information and let people PM me for details. Though I must admit, anyone who does a search can probably figure out exactly who I am and what lab I'm in.

Someone please post!

I'm looking for labs that focus in one of 2 main areas. Emotional regulation of negative affect, within family or close relationships. Researchers include: Phillip Shaver, Ozlem Ayduk and Qing Zhou. The other line of research I'm interested in is themes related to intersubjectivity. The subtle aspects of social relatedness like eye gaze, facial feedback, imitation, joint attention..etc. Researchers include: Sally Rogers, Daniel McIntosh, Bruce Pennington...etc. These themes are closely looked at in autism research.

Anyone out there point me in the right direction?

Just sent you a PM with some info on a few big emotion folks. Not specifically within the family context, but could easily be extended in that direction. If you want more info, just let me know. I applied primarily to mood researchers so I'm pretty familiar with many of the people in that field.

I am just going to keep posting here to keep this thread active. Take a second to write about the exciting research coming out of your lab.

Good luck, T4C! A friend of mine just started her APPIC internship and seems to be really enjoying it, $17k stipend and all.

Wow! Like T4C, I can pull that kind of money in a couple of months in private practice. Yet, I am still pursuing the graduate school application process. If that doesn't scream "intrinsic motivation"...but I digress...

Does anyone have any knowledge about working with the following faculty and their labs: James Gross, Iris Mauss and/or Silvia Bunge. All are doing emotional regulation research--while Silvia is doing more Cog control. Silvia and Iris came out of James Gross' lab.

Any insight is appreciated.

any working with health psych people? in particular with medication adherence?

Already PMd you about James Gross, but I'll reiterate here that his work is amazing, his writing is amazing and his lab is INCREDIBLY productive.

By all reports I've heard of, he's also pleasant to work with. Will drive you hard, but is still a personable guy. That's second hand though, so I can't guarantee it.

Were I willing to go the Experimental psych route, he likely would have been #1 on my list.
