My university is pretty big in cooperative education (Northeastern University). I've heard/seen good things of the programs so I'm down to try it.

Unfortunately from what I see the business/engineering departments offer a lot more in terms of co op compared to the opportunity for the "pre-science" kids so I decided to go out there and ask around.

What are you your opinions for jobs that would be particularly interesting to d schools/beneficial for an application?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

well aside from the obvious shadowing dentists i got a job as an assistant which got me application points and experience and a letter of rec... if you can't find luck there try to find a dental lab in your area and see if they have jobs... if you cant find anything dental related at all try for any volunteer or even paid activity that you can make a case for demonstrating leadership cause i was asked specifically what i did in leadership positions... but i was also asked why i didnt choose med school so even though it would be great experience and im sure many people will respond to this comment by saying im a ****** but i would avoid too much stuff that makes it seem like you really want to go to med school haha

Will definitely look into dental assistant/lab jobs.

Anyone else?

How do you get a job as a dental assistant if you're not trained or certified, and lack experience? It seems like people are always saying to get a job as an assistant, but all the listings I've found ask for experience, which most pre-dents dont have (doubt shadowing counts)

ive been trying to get a dental assistant job for a long time and all they want is experience which i don't have.....its really hard to get a dental lab job withoust experience, except you know somebody ......trust me

Within the boundaries of dentistry, the most you can do as a full time student without experience is dental related research. Research is not only beneficial to your application, but it will be a valuable asset after graduation.

Try to find a dental clinic to volunteer at. Dental clinics that provide free services, for people who otherwise can't afford it, are always happy to have more help.

I am currently a dental assistant in Richmond, VA and I will be attending VCU dental school in July. The current office I work for hires two predental students every summer that are applying to dental school and so far the previous 8 have all gotten in and so you work for a year getting experience and learning the business while getting paid and then start dental school if you get in the next year. I will be leaving on July 1st to start dental school and they will need a new highly-motivated assistant that is trying to get into dental school for the 2011 cycle. I moved here for this opportunity and I am letting follow SDN applicants about his opportunity. Have a great day and if I can help let me know.

Wow, that's insane and awesome that the dentist(s) do that. Must have been a great opportunity. I'm from Boston & I can't even find anyone who will let me shadow.

I am graduating in June and was actually planning to move to DC for the year while I apply. Do you think you could give me the information of this dentist? Thanks!

I worked in pre-clinical biopharmaceutical research. It's not related to dentistry at all, but it looked good under the "research experience" section of the AADSAS application. Plus it gave me a job with health insurance and I at least made enough money to save up a few grand before dental school...

Interesting bump.

Trying to land a dentistry related research position but if not I'm down for any research position.

Go around to local dental offices and ask if any positions are available. Even if you worked up front you can venture off to the back from time to time. It is sooo valuable to have an idea of the business side of dentistry, too, since you will be running it. So if you cannot get a hands on assistant job, go for receptionist position. Heck, just cleaning a dental office is pretty easy and even then you can make powerful connections and learn a lot.
