Hey guys today I was thinking this idea that came from asking why DO and MD take sep exams with the merger. So here it is: What if the complex becomes part of usmle and the DO components become an added requirement for DO candidates. But here is the real wonder: If that becomes the case should DOS be titled as MD,DO?

Here's a better idea. The only reason COMLEX exists is $$. So how about we just do away with the test and still have students pay the money. I'd pay money to not have to take a useless garbage test.

A lot of people on this forum came up with the same idea multiple times. Unfortunately, the COMLEX is a money maker. A lot of these things come down to politics and money, just like many things in life. Its not like this exam and its osteopathic elements are kept for sheer altruism for the DO profession.

I think we should scrap both MD and DO and all be MBchB; MBBS; MD; DO; BMBS-- the semicolons are apart of one ginormous, all inclusive degree: donned on black colored lab coats.

Boom. The nurses wouldn't know what the do next.

ORRRR we should all wear jerseys with our field on the front and instead of our last name on the back it will say the aforementioned superstar degree.

This. We should push for this because it's really our only chance. Instead of taking the COMLEX, we should be allowed to take the USMLE and submit a "licensing fee" equal to the amount required to take COMLEX to the NBOME. They get all their sweet sweet $$$ along with extra savings from not having to hire people to make the damn thing anymore. We don't have to take it. Everybody wins.

Make OMM an optional certificate. I'd even pay like 1 grand to opt out.

The NBME (board that writes the USMLE) and the NBOME (COMLEX) are two separate entities. I don't see something like this coming to fruition any time soon but I'm sure there will be a thought of it down the road. But currently based on the ACGME and AOA merger FAQ, these two board exams will remain separate.

Nope, until DO schools become accred by the LCME and pass LCME accred, they cannot technically grant the MD degree here in the US.

This is why there's a constant reminder to applicants: if having the MD to your name is that important, don't apply DO!

Yet there was a state not too long ago that allowed DOs to convert themselves to a MD title upon a small fee. I think you can guess which state that was.

Dude this is all speculation for what is to come with the merger. As much as titles matter, DOs have not gotten their fair share of recognition for their special techniques in addition to the allopathic medicine they learn. For the sake of inclusion and recognition of this field, I thought it appropriate just like ppl put titles like MD PhD. Just a fair thought. I don't think getting rid of the DO title is good because it hold a unique discipline but one that is in addition to traditional medicine.

The COMLEX isnt the only exam in town that's designed to make money. Don't forget about STEP 2 CS.

Not too long ago? You mean in the 1970s?

That happened very very quickly. The AOA def looked down at that little proposition.

What @AlteredScale said, but also it was short lived because the idiots in California didn't have a good enough reason to rid the state of DOs. UC Irvine was the DO college that went to MD, right?

Yea basically every DO I know thinks it to be the most bizarre thing that happened.

I would be down with this. All for a vote?

Oh, please. Don't hold your breath. I try and stay away from the cynical, if true, meme about COMLEX being $ for NBOME, but I'd say the exam isn't going anywhere anytime soon because of the "separate but equal" mindset that pervades AOA.

I would like to see COMLEX become an exit exam for the COMs, and all grads take USMLE. In 2040-2060, we'll see if this pans out.

And no, there won't a single medical degree, just like we have LLD and JD, or DMD and DDS, or the terms physicians and surgeons.

Correct. The CMA almost extirpated DOs in the state of CA when they pulled this off. One has to admire their ruthlessness.

The legality of it was overturned in the courts because it was viewed as "restraint of trade"

"The California Experiment" = trade your DO for an MD for $65 in 1961. Memorize that fact and I guarantee it'll get you a point on an OPP exam someday.

seeing that now ACGME is governing residency positions after the merger moreso, I am thinking you are right about assuming the requirement of USMLE for all medical graduates.

I bet it never becomes a hard requirement. It will be an unwritten rule, honestly it already should be.
