I was wondering if certain specialties have great advantages over others if the desire is to enter industry (pharma, biotech) as an MD/MBA. I am interested in the study of the nature of disease and have concluded that I may do pathology, which I thought might tie in well to industry in a general sense. I am guessing that those involved in industry forego the practice of clinical medicine?

I think the ideal specialty is one that you can see yourself enduring residency through. It sounds a bit hokie and I apologize for this, but I think it's true. A friend of mine, a great people person, wanted to go into biotech, so he decided to go into Pathology because of this. I thought it was a huge mistake. A year later, he couldn't stand it and changed residencies. Bottom line is, if you don't like what you are doing, you're not going to be able to do a 3+ year residency.

With that said, certain residencies are better than others if you want a career in business. First, it depends upon what you want to do. If you want clinical knowledge but don't want to spend a long time in training, Family, Internal and ER are great choices. If you want to get into biotech, Path is a great way to go. If you want to go into Pharma, Internal & Psych are good. If you want more time on your hands, ER & Anesthesiology work well for this. However, there is no ideal specialty and you can be successful in business no matter what field you come from. Just keep in mind you will bring something different to the table depending upon what field you are coming from.

what kind of career options are there within major pharmaceutical industry companies for someone who has completed a psychiatry residency, and then completed a MBA at mid-tier program?

Never pick a residency to go into industry later on... if you want to do a residency, pick one you like. These companies don't split hairs like that. They'll take you. Remember, its not like they have 100 board-eligible/certified MDs wanting these jobs. It will most likely be only you with this profile.

Relax. Obviously, if you want a career in business and you know that now, pick a short residency that you'll enjoy.

thanks, its a long way off anyway, path just seems intriguing as of now but ill see.
