Ideas for Peds presentation

I'm currently on an inpatient service that does a lot of peds GI/HemeOnc/Endocrine. I need to come up with a good idea for a presentation, but I really don't know where to start as far as good ideas.

Any suggestions? It would be greatly appreciated.

The differential diagnosis for and treatment of constipation in a peds patient would be a good GI issue to address.

Its always a good idea to do it on something one of your patients has. If not, the bread and butter stuff like the previous post is very good starting point. Other common GI issues such as diarrhea, vomiting, abd pain are a good start. Pick something in the differentials of any one of those, base your presentation on that and you should have no problems. Hope it goes well!

the puking kid is always interesting in my mind. and honestly the differentialy is huge which you'll see if you deal with pediatrics as a resident (which i guess is restricted to gen surg, peds, family, EM)

I would avoid anything with a huge differential. A huge differential just means you need to be well versed on a huge amount of stuff. Do something that is very focused, can be covered in a short presentation, and won't bore everyone to tears. How about going over UTI's in children. Go over the incidences for different age groups, the appropriate workup in different scenarios, and the likely organisms and treatment. If not UTI something similar. You should present a diagnosis not a symptom or presentation.

From an EM perspective, peds abdominal pain is frequently a diagnostic morass... not only is imaging sometimes difficult to obtain/prioritize/radiate, but also has a large component of veterinary medicine as young patients cannot adequately describe their symptoms (esp if they are pre-speech). So, depending on the amount of time you'll have and desired breadth of topic, you could discuss:

1) life threatening abdominal pain - signs, symptoms, workup
2) review of imaging concerns in pediatric abdominal pain - us v. ct v. MRI v. plain films

If you want to focus on endocrine, go with the bread & butter:

1) new onset DKA v. HONC

HemOnc is quite broad when it comes to peds, and often quite specific as well; as a student, I'd avoid this topic.
