If a bullet causes a spring to compress 4x further than first bullet..

    how much would work increase?

    I figured OK...F=kx....so if x increases by a factor of 4 then the F in FxD= work should increase by 4.

    The answer key however says to use (1/2)kx^2 formula however ....but i thought that was equal to potential energy...not force. Anywho...it says the work increases by a factor of 16.

    whats going on here???

    Work and energy are what you want to look at, not force, because by compressing the spring you are increasing it's potential energy.

    Look up the work-energy theorem if that does not sound familiar.
