Hi All,

I'm wondering how you would recommend I handle a question on why I didn't check off "white" in my primary app. Both my parents came from South America and I grew up in a spanish-speaking/latino household and environment. As such I consider myself latino/100% [insert country here]. I suppose my skin complexion is tan /light brown or right in the middle of the color gradient.

Any perceived racial advantage/disadvantage aside, I simply didn't check off "White" because I've never felt myself or self-identified as White. Moreover, my personal and immediate family history aligns much more with components of the Hispanic experience than it does the White experience in this country.

Any ideas on how to address this in an interview if it comes up without sounding conniving, ignorant, distasteful, etc?

We're not allowed to ask questions like that, and if you ever get one like it, complain to the Admissions Dean.

Are interviewers allowed to ask about my experience of being discriminated?

I was asked about if I was ever discriminated at work and even after I said no, the interviewer kept asking "no? You sure? what about at school?"

I was so confused by the questions.

Seems like a fair question, given the right context, but it can also be a hot button topic, and it's certainly NOT a question I'd ever ask.

The fact that the interviewer was surprised shows that s/he had an agenda, or at the minimum, a particular worldview that was not healthy.
