If doctors were to make very little money (say 50 grand a year)...

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Absolutely. I'm not intent on attending medical school only for the money. Sure, it's a nice bonus, but it's my fascination of the human body and love for medicine that's made me choose to go.

lol thats some funny s***.. admissions committees must laugh their asses off when reading personal statements.

oooo look a wide eyed idealist. money isn't everything but when you are 250k in the hole after med school 50k a year + malpractice.... no thanks i would go in engineering.

would you still be so set on troll school? 🙂 I'm just interested in what most people would say here.

No, of course not. I'd be a nurse and make more money than that, with fewer hours, much less tuition, and 1/7th of the post-secondary education that I'll have when I'm done.

50k??? Hell no.

In fact, get ready, OP, because this will really twinkle your toes: If I knew I was only going to make 100k, I sure as hell wouldn't do it then either.

Yeah but you're already ballin', that's why. 😛

I play to win. These fools stole my blue headband, but not before I threw down the 360 tomahawk jam on their candyasses in a game. They challenged me to "Horse". I told them I only play "Equus ferus caballus".

No sir, I would look into the local BSN programs that I'm more than qualified for.

As for me? 50k? No. Assuming I had no debt, I'd do it for 100k-ish though. Or rather, I'd still be applying and planning on doing it. I might become more jaded, but considering the length of training, once you're in - you're pretty much in.

Any answer of "yes" is essentially contingent upon a proportional reduction of the cost of medical education.

+1..definitely agree with you there!

with the way government regulations are being placed on the profession and the health care market, i wouldn't doubt that doctors will make 50k a year in a decade or so. If so, I would absolutely leave the country and go to another developed country with a free market in health care.

Do you SINCERELY think our salaries are going to be a third of what they currently are? I mean honestly, that sounds ridiculous. I would say the most likely scenario is a 20% reduction in our pay (on average)...so say IM starts out at 150K/year, it'll maybe drop to 120-130K (where it was a few years ago)

Exactly. physicians are leaving Canada in droves. I wonder why...

Do you have an article that says physicians are leaving Canada in DROVES?! Some doctors are leaving Canada due to better salaries in the US, but their healthcare system is very different from the US system. That being said, their system is still favored over the US system by a lot of Canadians....(including physicians).
