If I start a job/volunteering in June should I put it on my application?

I plan on submitting my application on June 1st (or very early June). On the AMCAS form I noticed that in the hours section for each activity it says hours you have completed or expect to complete. I have signed up to volunteer at a local healthcare facility that starts in June. Additionally I just got a new job that starts in late June. Should I put these on my application? My thinking is that even though I haven't done the hours now, by the time I get to the interview I'll have had some substantial experiences in these activities. I already have a bunch of clinical hours (as well as other decent ECs), but this new volunteering position seems like it will be better a experience to talk about. What are your thoughts?

You can not include an activity the start date of which begins after submitting your primary.

Based on this, I did not include the activities (research) in which I participated in the months leading up to and following my AMCAS submission. I actually don't know if this is typical or not, but it's just my 2 cents.

Editted to say that I did not make very clear what I meant. I did not include a single activity that began within a month or so of submitting AMCAS (because I hadn't achieved anything in that lab yet!). However, it is highly recommended that substantive work/research/volunteering in which you are involved at the time of your AMCAS submission be included in your AMCAS application. For the record, I did mention my work in the laboratory that I left out of my AMCAS application in my secondary applications (i.e., in the section that many schools include that inquires about the activities in which you'll be involved the year before starting medical school) and in interviews.

You could actually have included them as long as the start date was before your submission!

It's not typical. Why would you do this? It's unnecessarily hamstringing yourself. If you leave out things you're currently doing I would have had to leave out my full-time research job that was the centerpiece of my application.

As @gyngyn said, as long as the start date for the activity is before the AMCAS submission you can list it.

Eh... there was only one activity and it had only just started (i.e., within the month). It wouldn't have changed my application.

Dagger! It would have made all the difference! :wacky:

I'm glad you were kidding. Humor is so hard for me to detect on the internet.

I was going to play it so that I could post "OMG!!!11!!! gyngyn, do you think I should re-apply next cycle so that I can get into a top medical school?" but then @SN12357 ruined it...

You know I'm so concrete I would have just lit right into you!

Are you sure I wouldn't be able to include an activity that starts in June? Because I got this from the AMCAS instructions:

"Experience Dates
Include the start and end dates for each experience. Some Experience Types, such as Awards, Presentations/Posters and Publications, require only one date. Your start date must be no later than the current month and your latest end date must be no later than the August of the current application cycle."

Since the experience section just asks for month, and not a specific day, I should be able to include activities that start in June, no?

You can include your projected hours until next August as long as your start date is before you submit the primary.
