So, if you were not a Pathologist or if could not get into Pathology, what would be you "back-up' career?

I will start...I really do not have a back-up, but if I had to:

-Radiology
-PhD. in Pathology or related science
-Public Health
-Med/Lab tech

Absolutely NON of the clinical medical specialties.

What about you?

Wedding Planner. Seriously.

If I couldn't practice Pathology, I would leave medicine altogether.

If I couldn't have gotten into med school, x-ray tech. If not into path but still a physician, pediatrics and then would have specialized probably.

Career submarine warfare naval officer including command of a fleet ballistic missle sub and a fast attack sub.

I had some interest in some of the other fields of medicine...if I hadn't chosen path I probably would have ended up doing one of the following (in no particular order):
Emergency Medicine
Anesthesia
Surgical Subspecialty (i.e. ENT or Ophtho)
Derm (and try to do Mohs fellowship)
Radiology

Music production

If I had to stay in medicine: surgery or dermatology

Outside of medicine: Eastern religion professor or a wedding planner. Hey, Dawn1980, maybe we should get together and build a business. I've been obsessed with that kind of stuff since I was in high school minus, of course, all the drama from all the crazy ***** brides.

I would be...

in a better job market.

Ok, ok. Someone had to post it.

actress/ pop star/ graphic designer.. but if i had to stay in medicine: laparoscopic surgery.

College professor probably.

We have to be realistic right? If we're not being realistic I would just be a man of leisure. Or perhaps direct my own "non-profit" foundation that has a vast fortune.

Pathology was my back-up choice. I can see myself doing IM & a subspecialty these days due to the new ACGME work hours. I've always liked ID but didn't want to go through the pain of an IM residency.

Haha! After successfully planning my own wedding and helping plan my colleagues' weddings (including attendings -- murky territory, I know), I think I'm well-qualified. LOL.

Investment Banker. You mess up there you get the golden parachute.

BU beat me to it. Probably a forest ranger or similar wildlife/environmental profession. There was actually a time there while figuring out the whole med school track that I looked seriously at the entry level jobs vs grad school in a relevant field. When I started college I had a lot of interest in IT/computer science, but in retrospect that was more for fun than profession.

Less realistically but more interestingly, maybe a professional fisherman, wildlife/environmental photographer, or writer. (If I suddenly was obscenely rich and financial pressure was irrelevant, I'd consider them now.)

In medicine.. I really don't know. I liked patients (most of the time), but by the end no one 'other' specialty really jumped out at me as holding long-term interest.

You beat me to it, for exactly the same reason. Also, back then, I thought radiology was a joke, and still do; but it was a cushy, well-paid joke, and still is. Put radiology down for my more cynical moments.

MEDICAL MALPRACTICE ATTORNEY.

"Looks longing at jury of unemployed "peers."

"We don't want to question Dr. X's competence as a physician we are sure he/she is a great physician, we just don't want him/her to hurt other patients as he has hurt our plantiff."

"Jury members sniffle and wipe tears."

Yoga instructor and/or librarian

I mean, I'd get to relax AS A JOB, and everyone would have to stay quiet!! Nirvana.

CYTOTECHNOLOGIST

Its what I do now. I am also certified PA(ASCP) but only do cytology/cytometry/molecular testing now.

Wow. I cant believe Im the first to say it: NINJA!

Barring that: Wolverine from the X-men, a playtester for the Call of Duty franchise or the owner of a massive comic book shop that has a cigar lounge, full bar, strip club and gaming rooms, perferably located in post-Fidel Castro Cuba where I would name it: "Rick's Café Américain"

Architect..

Actually studied architecture for a bit... which partially explains why I don't think the job market in pathology is dismal. If you really want soul crushing hopelessness and despair, try to practice architecture.

I know it's fish. But is it chicken?

So are you a pathologist?

No. I'm a full time Cytotechnologist at at a hospital hoping to begin medical school in 2014 with pathology as a specialty interest but keeping my options open. I use SDN mostly for the pathology section.

Good luck and don't forget to keep your options open, you might fall in love with another specialty

Sounds kind of gay, if you ask me...

I am gay actually.. but I didn't realize architecture was one of the phenotypes that old fat men were using to spot homosexuality these days. I guess I should let me friends that I left back in architecture school know that.

Is anyone else wondering who the neuropath fellow in CO is?😛

Part owner of the New York Giants.

Only I'm poor and I couldn't afford to buy half the team from the Mara or the Tisch family. So Pathology it is.
