If not intern during school, then no job after graduation? Is it that bad?

I am in a three-year school. I didn't apply for the intern jobs the first year when CVS, RiteAid came for campus hiring because I was pregnant. Now I am a second year and had the baby. I want to look for an intern job, i.e, 10 hours a week. However, the hiring situation is bad this year. Those chains didn't come to hire student interns. I directly went to some local independents, they were not hiring either. Is it really that bad that you can't find a job without an intern.
I am in a 3 year school, will soon go to rotation in August, and graduate in 2013. Is it too late to look for an intern job? Also, I got to know an independent pharmacist who owes a beautiful pharmacy. I was thinking about doing volunteer there. He is well connected, worked in VA, Kaiser, etc. Should I go to volunteer or should I just wait for rotation?

Do anything you can. Volunteer, work, anything to get in. Good luck.

The job situation really is that bad, and it has been for years. It is getting worse with all the tons of new schools. Just read this board. Good luck!

Get advice from the internet where people lie all the time?

OP, talk to pharmacists at those independents and ask for names and phone numbers of others you can talk to. When I got my first job at a pharmacy, it was never advertised, and I had to talk to about 30 people before I found one. Just keep trying, and talk to people in real life, instead of the internet and you'll have better luck.

Thanks for calling me a liar, crazybob. Of course it says CRAZY right in your name, look who's talking. And I'm not lying about how bad the job market is either, and yet people keep coming to pharmacy schools and the schools keep opening. One of life's hard lessons.
My main problem right now is that I must have contacted every pharmacy within a 150 mile radius of me. I have had pharmacist friends with connections try to get me interviews too, and most of the time they can't even help.

Your situation sucks and no one is arguing that pharmacy is getting easier to get a job in, but I think it is safe to say your situation is not representative of the majority.

Agreed. Angela, Are you sure you're not on a blacklist? Just an honest question...

I see no reason why someone can't land at least a Per Diem job or two and work a decent amount of hours each week. If you're single, living on 20 hours a week even with student loans is entirely doable. And once those loans are gone, you're doing great. Seriously, the average U.S. income is $50,000 annually, which you can make as a pharmacist working 20 hours a week. Then, if you can't get any more hours as a pharmacist, you can work another job for another xxx hours and make more than the average Joe.

Again, it is hard to even get an interview for a per diem job. Every time in my area you do, you compete with at least 10 people for one position. I do my best on every interview. I can't pay back my loans on a part time or per diem job, I have over 150K in loans.
